It's rare I make a point to hear alibama.....never worth it and ALWAYS irritating. Have better use of my time. He's all wind and plays the same tunes which never really address the situation.....he fabricates what he thinks people want to hear...and it's usually not us.

That should tell he’s not the one pulling the strings...he’s simply co-operating with those who are...and they do have the ways and means.

Ultimately, Ukraine's about opening the door to it's resources for well-connected corporations. These are European and US...many currently waiting on the sidelines for this war to cease so they can come in ad take hold.

But Ukraine has so much debt...and now new loans to IMF....and others...all the revenues will go right through the government to these corporations...and other’s there for the payoffs. Ukrainians can expect a trickle down....but have already lost pensions, gov. services etc. without the ability nor training to do the jobs ahead. These will go to outside interests as well as bringing in workers from other areas.

The people meanwhile have already been placed under austerity measures, loss of community services and reduced pensions. It's going to get worse for them before Ukraine has any hope of their nations debt being stabilized.

....”It’s the price of freedom”...

No austerity isn’t....what bus did you just get off from?

It keeps a nation ‘under bondage’ as a debtor nation.,,which is exactly what Ukriane is marked for. Eu will control it via US and other corporate entities.....in comes the revenues old they go.

I suppose Obama does hate Putin because Putin easily bests him at every turn, making him look like an idiot.

Putin has started a transnational shooting war in Europe, PO’d his best customers in the EU and now cratered his economy with these sanctions.

Only in a dream world is Putin beating everybody. Pretty much fail across the board at this point for one party state Russia.

Great point. If the kenyan thinks sanctioning Russia is a good idea, he better like the idea of looking behind himself all the time. The Bear plays for keeps, does not matter if you are US president or not. He will hunt you down and eat you.

...”It is the price of freedom from the tyrant up north”...

Well you can say it but that doesn’t make it so.....as usual..

Austerity has nothing to do with Putin nor Russia....it’s placed and developed by the EU/ Imf in order to obtain loans to run their government and knock off some of their debt. Otherwise Ukraine would have folded entirely....which it very likely could anyway with all the money now going to their military....which cannot be even fed after Aug. 1st or thereabouts. War or not... Austerity are the “conditions” or no money.

“Winter drawing near” is indeed likely a factor behind Ukraine pressing the separatists hard now. However, like most any chart that’s also shown up in the NYT, that one is, well, superficial. That chart shows only imports, and does not take into account each country’s domestic energy production (or lack of.) It also does not differentiate heating imports from general energy usage.

Take Poland for example. The Poles derive most of their heating from coal, Russian coal, in fact, despite having had a long time large coal mining industry of their own. What’s happened is that Polish coal production has been undercut by Russian imports, in recent years. However, much of the decline in Polish production has been so recent that I suspect at least some production could be resurrected in an emergency. How much, I do not know.

Another factor is ability to cut back and get by. For example, last winter when we got our 1st big heating (electricity) bill, I said “yikes!” and impressed upon my wife and daughter that though we were not being silly-wasteful, we must conserve electricity. I similarly took measures in my shop. The result was that without any drastic change in our lives, we were able to cut usage in the next month by over 20%, even though average temperatures actually ran slightly colder in that next billing period. My guess is that in most countries, usage could be cut by as much as 30%, and after that is when it starts getting really uncomfortable.

All in all, countries like Germany would get by, I believe, even if Putin cut off exports, but the real question could be whether Germany, France, etc., would sacrifice to bail out, say, Slovakia.

Barring a truly major war, it probably will not come to that, at least for Europe. Obviously, even 30% cuts of energy imports would have serious economic consequences, but the consequences to Russia’s economy **at present** would be just as severe.
