Did the War in Libya Prove Hawks Right or Wrong?
The Atlantic ^ | 29 July 2014 | Conor Friedersdorf

The unintended consequences of military intervention are nearly impossible to predict. ___

"Islamist militants armed with antiaircraft weapons and rocket-propelled grenades stormed a lightly defended United States diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya," The New York Times reported on September 12, 2012. " The attack, which killed the American ambassador and three staffers, would ultimately reveal that the CIA was running a secret mission out of Benghazi.

Ross Douthat:

The worst-case situation has not come to pass in Libya itself. But thanks to the ripple effects from Colonel Qaddafi’s fall, it’s well on its way to happening in nearby Mali. Not much attention has been paid to these events. ... But northeastern Mali is part of the same Saharan region that encompasses southern Libya, which means weapons and fighters from the Libyan war have moved easily across Algeria into Mali since Colonel Qaddafi’s fall, transforming a long-simmering insurgency into a multifront civil war.

Mali’s insurgents are mostly Tuaregs, a Berber people whose homeland cuts across several national borders. This spring, their uprising won them effective control of the northern half of Mali, which they renamed Azawad. The central government’s weak response, meanwhile, led to a coup in Mali’s capital, Bamako, which replaced the civilian president with a junta that promised to take the fight to the rebels more effectively. That hasn’t happened; instead, the rebels have taken the fight to one another. The Tuareg insurgency included an Islamist element, known as Ansar Dine (Defenders of the Faith), which is affiliated with a jihadi group, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. In the last month, Ansar Dine’s fighters have seized the breakaway region’s major cities, ousting their erstwhile allies and embarking on a Taliban-style campaign of vandalism against the region’s monuments.

Obama took us to war in Libya and there was no outrage from the Left and the disorder there afterwards is on Obama and Hillary’s shoulders.

Well it certainly proves FReepers right.

Aside from the usual hot for any war crowd, we warned that stirring that fight would be a disaster.

Sec. of Hate Hillary Clinton was party to war crimes: "WE came, WE saw, HE DIED!" (her quote regarding the torture, abuse, and murder of a POW named Momar Gaddafi).

The most shocking thing about the war to me is how weak the Europeans are. They ran out of bombs after about 48 hours and we had to take over from them.

Obama gave a “mission accomplished” speech at the United Nations claiming that his “third way” had brought about regime change without a loss of American life.

Had to break a few eggs to get there and endure the subsequent terrorist attack on US personnel...

After refusing to support one of our staunchest allies in the region, Mubarak, it was silly of Hussein to claim that attacking Libya was worthwhile. Qaddafi was a scumbag, but the savages who sought and obtained power were no better. We also had nothing to gain by intervening in Libya either way.

Why else would Hussein concentrate on the most worthless countries, if not out of a personal alleigance with Leftist Islamist movements and dictators?

What were Hillary and Obama’s strategic goals when they used American taxpayer provided funds, personnel, equipment and facilities to overthrow the government of Libya? How was The United States supposed to benefit by overthrowing Qadaffi? Did they explain that?

Where is Qadaffi’s treasure?

The unintended consequences of military intervention are nearly impossible to predict.

Not always. If you intervene to destroy an existing government under attack by islamist mobs, with no other follow-through, I guarantee you are going to get bad results, i.e. islamist, tribal thuggery.

When you intervene to help the “worst of the worst” against the “tolerable when intimidated”, what can you expect?

“The unintended consequences of military intervention are nearly impossible to predict. ___”

not if you know what you want the outcome to be and go in with a strong plan, overwhelming force and the desire for a clear and solid victory.
