“Israel had appeared to be winding down its attack operations in Gaza Monday and contenting itself with blowing up the remaining tunnels from Gaza into Israel. However, a serious incident in which at least four Israelis were killed by a Hamas mortar changed all that.”

Nothing like a baboon attack to remind everyone the job isn’t quite done yet.

I guess they want to clear a standoff zone, to keep tunnel entrances a certain distance from the border.

I keep waiting for a decisive strike against Hamas, but perhaps they don’t intend to depose them.

On the other hand, maybe they assess that they have will have the time they need to be deliberate, and to conserve the lives of their soldiers. So maybe they will shape the future battlefield now by clearing fields back from the border, and take out Hamas afterward.

I always think that Israeli operations will be shut down prematurely from political pressure, and that they need to quickly shape the future situation during any brief period of war. So I am looking for an old school Israeli bold stroke against Hamas, rather than a grind.

I don’t see the border tunnels as Hamas’ center of gravity, but rather their financing, domestic popularity and ability to suppress domestic opposition.

They must largely be disarmed, disgraced and impoverished; if they can not be militarily crushed and imprisoned outright. It is going to be hard if they are left in power.

Israel needs to stop sending messages warning them and just KILL THEM ALL.
God will sort out the innocent from the guilty; easy task, with the satan worshiping ragheads, they are all guilty.

I’d like to see Egypt step up and help crush Hamas with Israel. We’ll see.

It seems that Egypt would strongly like to see Hamas crushed, but they have their hands full at home, in the Sinai, on their Western border where Libya is collapsing, and to the South where they have the Islamist state of Sudan.

I doubt that Egypt will overtly jump in militarily - Israel can handle it, and Egypt would never be able to live it down among Arabs.

Diplomatically and covertly though, I’d be surprised if they are not working to screw Hamas. At some level, the Egyptian military is at war with Hamas and the larger Muslim Brotherhood.

My fantasy for a good screwing of Hamas is to disgrace them in the eyes of the Gazan public, disarm or disable them militarily, impoverish them by cutting off most of their income sources, and install their opponents (Fatah) in power, to root them out in ways that would make “civilized” people blanche.

After combat operations are complete, I’d expect some Egyptian intelligence or even special forces operations in Gaza, no matter how things shake out.
