Six-year-old girl watches in horror as police 'shoot dead her dog Apollo in her front yard

A six-year-old girl watched in horror as police gunned down her one-year-old dog as it stood in their front yard, her family has said.

The girl's mother, Nicole Echlin, said their shepherd-mix Apollo, whom they have had since he was a puppy, got out of their yard in Hometown near Chicago, Illinois on Friday afternoon.

After they chased him around the neighborhood, he returned to the yard and was standing on the lawn when police arrived and pulled out their guns, Echlin told the Chicago Tribune.

'He started showing his teeth - that's when the officer shot him,' Echlin, 27, said. 'I didn't know that was going to happen.'

it’s only a dog. The little girl is going to see much worse than that in her long life.

No, it's not "just a dog". It is a very steep and slippery slope leading to worse atrocities. Yes, she will see worse. Chances are, much worse eventually if this kind of behavior goes unchecked.

The more of this that is gotten away with, the more we can expect (and are getting even now).

I often hear of “a few bad cops” giving all the others a bad name. The question then becomes; “Why don’t the good cops, turn in the bad cops?” The only comparison and I will be the first to admit that it is an unfair one, is to Islam.

We are always told of the radical 10% that are the trouble makers, but we never hear anything from the other 90%, that rebukes the actions of the minority.

Same holds true of police, no matter how poorly or illegally an officer has acted, his brothers and sisters in blue will NOT speak up against him.

Another impediment to cleaning up law enforcement is that when an officer is found guilty of misconduct, the tax payers and not the officer are on the hook for any costs. The officer may lose their job, but the tax payer foots the bill.

So what can we do to fix this situation? Well as my old First Sergeant used to say; “Don’t complain unless you have a solution to the problem.” Well here is my idea.

Any and all monetary damages awarded to a plaintiff as a result of the actions of law enforcement officers, are to ONLY come from the offending departments or organizations pension fund.

Only when it hits home personally by weakening every officers retirement, will the good ones begin to turn in the bad ones. In time, department phycologists and training officers will do a better job of weeding out the nut jobs. Senior staff will do a better job of triple checking addresses before conducting a “no-knock” late night call to a suspect’s home. Officers will advise their partners that a course of action is not advised, rather than just going along.

And once this has happened, law enforcement might begin to gain some of the mountain of trust and respect that they have lost in past few years.

And a very fine brochure it is. From time to time I print out a few and leave them in random places for people to find.

Thank you / that's pretty awesome.

It’s one thing to say that if you were talking about finding an old dog had quietly passed in their sleep, or even a dog who had to be put to sleep for an illness such as cancer. While tragic...those things indeed happen, and learning to come to terms with then is part of life.

Completely another to have some tyrannical jackass blast her dog for no reason other than their own insufficiencies. There was no good reason for this, and it’s wrong, wrong, wrong. To accept it as “just” anything is letting the state once more advance into territory it never should have been given an inch into.

Yeah, eventually she going to have to deal with people like you - black-pantsuited females with charred, smoking craters where their hearts used to be.

Compared to that, a beloved pet dog shot to death in front of a six year old girl is actually funny, eh?

Oh I'm sorry, did I forget to say SCREW YOU?

Two Questions:

1) How many dogs did the "To Protect and Serve" crowd kill last year?

2) How many dogs did FedEx/UPS/USPS and gas/water/power meter readers kill last year?

Bingo ... personal liability and serious prison time for police officers guilty of misconduct in office will tend to solve the problem.

This has turned into a Rite of Passage for the dolts who want to show how tough they are. Tell the people to leash their dog, for Cripes sake, and give them a chance to do so before you go further.

These idiots all know dogs are territorial and will think their famiy is threatened and they can learn how to defuse that if they can learn to be sensative to "other cultures".

We have a Chihuahua who is very protective. He’s also very fast and hard to catch if he’s on the run. Sheriff’s deputy came to the house one evening to deliver some papers to my nephew, and the young niece answered the door and let the deputy in. Didn’t think to restrain the dog first. Little speedy growls, barks and runs after the deputy and nips her pant leg. She said he bit her, but I didn’t see any bite. Both the deputy and the Chihuahua lived.

Thanks for the Screw, it’s been a long time. sarc

My family are police. They aren’t the heartless a-holes that zulu made them out to be. I have a very big heart and believe it’s sad that the little girl watched her dog get shot. If she lives in an alcoholic house, she will see much worse in her life. I assumed she lives with dysfunction because
a. the pit bull
b. cops at her house.

A decent loving family doesn’t usually have their dog shot by cops.... so UP YOURS you DORK.

So you claim your full heart is why you are so shockingly heartless, go on to trash the little girl's entire family because the cop murdered her dog in front of her, and then try to insult me for calling you on your own words?

Try a different NLP tape, android.

Or on second thought, why bother? You are what you are. It's not like it's hidden anymore.
