OK, if they really believed that raising the minimum wage by $3 gets everyone above the poverty line, then the same bill could eliminate all welfare programs.

The last thing we want is everyone having a government job.
It wouldn't happen. People realize that, if you must work, it may as well be a job you like at a decent wage. And I don't know why you would think everyone would end up with a gov't job.
I agree completely with you, besides welfare should only be for those who are really unable to work and not for those who pop out one kid after another
Here’s an idea to blows the minds of the Socialist left:
Fine, increase the min. wage $3. At the same time, since there are no longer those in ‘poverty’, remove the ‘safety net’ and (finally) end the War on Poverty.
Course, my first suggestion has always been: Open your OWN business and pay your employees what YOU wish; don’t forget the bennies. Then, ping me in 2 years to let me know how it went (as I’ll presume 99% would be closed/out-of-biz).

Because it’s government. They will be unionized and pay the going wage for government jobs, higher than market can bear, and then half of them will be told to work at Planned Parenthood or handing out condoms to middle schoolers.
