MAHMUD RAQI, Afghanistan Taliban fighters are scoring early gains in several strategic areas near the capital this summer, inflicting heavy casualties and casting new doubt on the ability of Afghan forces to contain the insurgency as the United States moves to complete its withdrawal of combat troops, according to Afghan officials and local elders.
The Taliban have found success beyond their traditional strongholds in the rural south and are now dominating territory near crucial highways and cities that surround Kabul, the capital, in strategic provinces like Kapisa and Nangarhar.
Their advance has gone unreported because most American forces have left the field and officials in Kabul have largely refused to talk about it. The Afghan ministries have not released casualty statistics since an alarming rise in army and police deaths last year.
At a time when an election crisis is threatening the stability of the government, the Talibans increasingly aggressive campaign is threatening another crucial facet of the American withdrawal plan, full security by Afghan forces this year.

Once the US leaves an area, Islamic fundamentalists take over. This is repeated all over the place. People are more afraid of the God Hating Woman Hating Child Hating Islamic fighters than they are of Compassionate American Soldiers.
This could be a huge success for Obama; he hasn’t given the Islamists a nation in weeks.
Islam reared its ooogly head only in the 7th century--by the sword of course. It didn't slow down the feuding for a nanosecond.
The feuding won't be deterred, ameliorated or stopped by anything. Never has; never will.
God will end it when He ends our world.
WHAT the heck are our soldiers doing there anyway?
The Afghanis have only ONE thing: the poppy.
THAT can be grown almost anywhere. WHY are our soldiers put in harm's way for that God-forsaken dust pile?
And Obama said “Fore!”
Thanks Barry.
I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you.
Who could have foreseen this.
Totally unexpected news.
Years ago I knew this was going to happen. I’d joke with my brother about the Taliban inheriting all the water/sewerage treatment plants he helped build and begin operation.
Have to admit, the Islamists and the Taliban are smart, tough, and they just don’t give up, ever.
Very much like Hitler's SS. But the SS did give up and go home, and then they caused no more trouble. What's the difference? FDR, Churchill, and Stalin were smart enough to wage total war against the Nazis, not stopping until the Nazis were crushed.
Contrast that with Bush II's mushy hearts-and-minds approach to war with islam. I assign very little blame to Obama here. It was Bush's war to win or lose, and he lost it.
We need to do a “Dresden” on them.
And he says he's against nation building.
Every one of US lives were wasted over there. The entire ME should have been turned into a sheet of glass years ago.
Right after 9/11, that would have made a huge impact. the radicals respect power above all. But there is no will anywhere in the West for that sort of thing now.
Bush II had an incredible opportunity right after 9/11, a once in a millennium opportunity to crush radical islam into fine dust. He could have called for a world-wide crusade (yes, I'll use that word) and every civilization in the world would have responded.
I'll bet if Bush would have asked for help from, say, Peru, he would have gotten the whole Peruvian air force at his disposal. Same with Australia, Japan, etc., etc.
But Bush chose to go the LBJ route, not the FDR route. It makes me so sad, and so angry, that I can't bear to even look at Bush the few times he's on TV. His decisions might well mean the eventual end of the West.
The media backed off of war reporting years ago. With Bush it was 24/7.
We heard about the taking of Fallujah for a couple of days in Jan. Then nothing until ISIS had made huge gains.
The media is still protecting their guy (Obama). Makes me ill.
