Revisiting An Endless Summer (Where Were You in '64?)

--SNIP-- It's a little amateurish, eye-rollingly hokey, and yet irresistibly endearing in its aw-shucks wholesome sincerity. It's those qualities that have allowed the film to improbably endure as the most influential adventure sports documentary ever made, and warrant another limited theatrical run in a few dozen theaters nationwide to celebrate a half-century since it first screened.

Been there. Saw the first movie in a large auditorium, it was narrated by him before the studio bought it.

Every surf break in the world was destined to become crowded after that.

I didn't know he lived in Santa Cruz.

At that point in my life the idea of being a full time surf chaser was a pretty cool dream.

I had just heard about the Beatles from the girls across the street.

Me too...except for the creek thing. We had a nearby storm drain that things came out of, snakes and crayfish, etc.

And there was a well that was filled in with hunks and chunks of concrete in a field behind our house.

I don’t think he lived in Santa Cruz but he lived nearby on the San Francisco peninsula.

Somehow I always thought he was from down south.

Those were great times at Cowell's, etc.

He certainly looks like he was from Southern California. He actually lived down the street from where I grew up, in a cool Mediterranean-ranch-style villa.

I’m sure Jan and Dean had more than a 2 to 1 chick/guy ratio, (Probably more like 1000 to 1 for those 2!), when they sang that line in ‘Surf City’! Greatest surfin’ movie? My vote goes to ‘Ride The Wild Surf’. (Barbara Eden on the beach in a bikini!? Oh my!!!)

When I told my mother, she said: Rain my ass, they cancelled because they’re rioting in the city.

Yep. I also lived in Rochester - actually the suburban Eden called Henrietta.

Had been out of the city for 2 years, but still spent time going in to visit my grandmother and uncle. My uncle almost ran down a bunch of the rioters as they stopped rocking the car ahead of us and turned their attention on us - he gunned it and I felt at leat one bounce off the fender as they scattered. Funny how those who had been friends for years suddenly developed a deep hatred of us Whites - almost like they all took the same drug.

Yet another example that mothers know best.

Working at the family business outside of Watsonville, CA and between Jr. and Sr. year at UCLA.

Just got dumped on by Sue (you can still rot in hell, b!tch!) but then I met Lynn. I was trying desperately to get laid for the 2nd time in my life (yeah, I know, I still am.)

Cruising Ocean Ave. in Carmel with the blonde Lynn curled up next to me in my ‘57 Pontiac Star Chief convertible (with the top down, of course.)

One of the better years of my life. But they were all pretty good back then.

BTW, never got into the surfer thing. Still, I wasn’t exactly a greaser either.

Had an allergic reaction to hydrogen peroxide.

Dad was in Nam, I was 8 and we spent many days at the base pool or on Myrtle Beach collecting sharks teeth. Mowed big lawns for base personnel for a dollar, 50 cents more if it had not been cut in a long time.
