A state assemblywoman says New York City has other issues to deal with before taking in some of the migrant children from Central America streaming across the U.S. border.
Nicole Malliotakis - the daughter of immigrants - fired off a tweet in response to City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito’s suggestion Thursday that the city should offer to shelter some of the new arrivals.
"I think the priorities should be more focused on the citizens of this city as opposed to indidivudals who are entering the country illegally," she told the Daily News in an interview on Friday.
Mark-Viverito "should put pressure on the federal government to reform this broken system and enforce the existing laws, so we don’t have this type of process where we don’t know who’s coming and who’s going."
“And who is going to pay for this housing?” the Staten Island Republican wrote. “Another example of how NYC leaders think tax dollars grow on trees.”
