What is up with all these stories over the last few weeks of children dying in hot vehicles? Are the parents really that stupid?

They should start imprisoning people who “forget” that their child is in the car. Even those for whom it is a lapse in memory. Hard time for each child’s death.

People need to get the message that at a minimum they are going to do significant jail time if they allow this to happen, no matter what the excuse. Except for the truly stupid and drink/drug-addled, this type of negligence would probably come to an end quickly once adults realize they will face serious repercussions.

I can think of at least two answers:

1. Things like this simply went unreported in the past.

2. People really are now that stupid.

I am now old, have lived many years including pre-air conditioned times in a hot climate, and have no relatives, friends or neighbors who had such lapses.

I conclude that taken as a whole, Americans are trending down. Common sense is in decline.

Of course my father was born in the same cabin as his mother, not hospitals like my siblings and my wife’s siblings.

We have become far to tolerant of stupidity. Punish it more.

In a word YES. It seems every summer these tragedies occur. They cannot grasp the concept of how a car's interior reacts to exposure to high temperatures and sunlight. It doesn't take a PHD in physics understand this. Let's see if this "father" and his "significant other" get the kid glove treatment.

How many less would there be if the parents were allowed to put the car seats in the front instead of the back where the babies fall asleep and they are easier to forget?
