Birthright was founded by Jewish philanthropists Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt in 1999 to change the course of Jewish history and ensure the continuity of the Jewish people by strengthening Jewish identity, Jewish communities, and solidarity with Israel by sending young Jews on all-expense-paid trips there. The organization has been extremely successful: Birthright reports that more than 400,000 young Jewish men and women have visited the Holy Land on its dime, and research out of Brandeis University confirms that the trips are having the desired effect, producing a more-engaged Jewish diaspora with stronger ties to Israel. Though most trip alumni do not join the IDF (Birthrights spokeswoman told me they dont keep track), to do so seems like the ultimate fulfillment of Birthrights missionthe ultimate expression of a Jews solidarity with Israel is to take up arms to defend it.It turns out that its not that hard to persuade young people to see the world a certain way and that Birthright is very good at doing it. You spend hundreds of millions of dollars to convince young Jews that they are deeply connected to a country that desperately needs their support? This is what you get.
Reading that last paragraph, oh the irony of how much money has been expended by Benedikts Progressive Movement to groom kids into seeing the world it’s way ... with predictable results.
So it’s not what’s being done that offends her. Its the cause it’s being done in support of.
