What is this, three crashes in the past couple of weeks over there in that areas. Man, I am glad I quit flying back in the 1990’s.

“An Air Algerie flight en route to Algiers from Burkina Faso with 116 people aboard disappeared from radar early Thursday over the Sahara, the official Algerian news agency said.
Air navigation services lost track of AH0517 about 50 minutes after takeoff at 0155 GMT, the agency said. That means that it had been missing for hours before the news was made public.”

“Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, according to the Spanish airline Swiftair, which owns the plane.
Alex Duval-Smith in Mali said there was “very bad weather” in the area, as well as “armed groups”.”

Yeah, the last flight I took was to Reagan International, Sept 10th 2001 because I had an appointment at Walter Reed and was stranded there.
I’ve worked my life around no flying ever since.

Yes, they kept it to themselves for several hours - I imagine them frantic to find out where the plane is.

I quit flying commercial in July ‘96, after TWA 800 was shot down. If I can’t drive there, I don’t need to go there.

Flown commercial one time in the last 25 years and that was because the plane was in Dallas for it’s yearly check up. Our first was a King Air, Citation 2, Citation 4 and now we have a Citation XLS.

Sky News understands airlines had been warned in recent days not to fly over Mali.
The plane involved is a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 operated by Swiftair. The plane was asked to change route at 1.38am GMT (2.38am BST) because of a storm in the area.

Just talked to hubby who is a pilot in Burkina Faso. They would have been over Niger, not Mali.

I love flying.
It’s airports I hate.
And it’s ALL the fault of the muzzies.

That would put them in the area of Bourem in Mali.
UTA Flight 722 was blown out of the sky in 1989 by a bomb in the cargo hold, and wound up abou 800 miles east, in the desert in Niger.

S-300/SA-20Bs have a range of 121 miles. And Russia has cheerfully sold weapons systems all over Africa at this point.
