Healthcare Premiums Would Absolutely Explode If Today's Obamacare Ruling Stands!

A federal appeals court on Tuesday dealt a setback to the Affordable Care Act, ruling that premium subsidies provided through the federal health exchange in 36 states are invalid under the writing of the law.

Here's the practical effect of the ruling, if it withstands the rest of the legal process: More than 5 million, generally low-income Americans who received tax credits through the federal exchange to purchase health insurance would see their premiums explode.

Avalere Health, an independent healthcare firm, released an analysis last week showing that individuals who received premium subsidies for health insurance would see a premium hike of about 76% if courts ultimately rule they can't get tax credits through the federal exchange.

"The court case has major implications for future insurance coverage and access to care for millions of Americans," said Caroline Pearson, vice president at Avalere Health. "Depending on the ultimate decision by the courts and absent some other remedy, individuals in at least 25 states who remain in their current plans could see an average premium increase of over 70%."

I think this reporter is having a little trouble with the concept of how a subsidy works. Premiums already have “absolutely exploded” because of Obamacare. The subsidy is the taxpayers paying for part of that explosion.

Not explode, just not artificially depressed.

Them’s the unintended consequences when you don’t even read the bill let alone pass it by your lawyers.

No. Healthcare premiums would remain the same, it’s just that the taxpayers wouldn’t be picking up a hefty chunk of the tab.

Obama says just ignore it..and will probably try to use that pen....except that pen has no ink....because there has already been a decision on the matter.

If this ruling stands, does this mean people who got a 10K policy and only pay 1K have to find another 9K to pay the insurer this year?

RE: , it’s just that the taxpayers wouldn’t be picking up a hefty chunk of the tab.

But aren’t the subsidies already PROVIDED for millions of those who have enrolled?

How are they going to get it back?

Either that or they scream in the press and Obama bullies the insurers to cut premiums for low income people. One step closer to the bankrupting of the private insurance market, which would be fine by him.

No idea, and not the Court’s problem. There’s got to be some policy or precedent on how to deal with past expenditures that were later ruled illegal, and I’ve a sneaking suspicion that it boils down to “ignore it, but just don’t do it again”.

Yes. People would have to pay their own very high premiums, rather than forcing others to.

This is crap. All the subsidies will continue and more will be added. Courts mean nothing to the communists.

If it comes to that, then yeah, they are on the hook for making up the difference in the premium. Or somebody is.

And how will that play in the elections in November? The Republicans have been handed a HUGE club, will they simply let it drop and vote in subsidies outside the provisions of the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010”?

We don’t have money to pay our bills now. How is that going to make anything all better?
