New California law limits schools' full-contact football practice

Sacramento -- Schools in California that have football programs will be forced to limit the number of days and hours young athletes can practice tackling and other full-contact collisions as a way to prevent head injuries, according to a bill signed Monday by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The new law, which goes into effect Jan. 1, restricts full-contact practices to two 90-minute sessions per week during the regular and pre- season, and prohibits tackling during the off-season.

"Football is a great sport, but parents want to know if their kids are going to be safe," said Assemblyman Ken Cooley (D-Rancho Cordova), who sponsored the bill. "This is about protecting kids, as well as parents' peace of mind."

Currently, coaches can hold full-contact practices daily, if they choose.

The implication in the article is that these limitations will apply to high schools. But we are talking California, where insanity always metathesizes, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up applying to colleges as well, eventually.

Which means it may not be too long until the rest of the country looks forward to playing USC, UCLA, Stanford, Cal, San Diego State and a bunch of others.

You probably didn’t kill him. God probably took his life and you just happened to bump into him about the same time.

He controls the keys. When it’s your time to go, nothing will prevent it.

Looks like USC, UCLA and Stanford will be recruiting from out of state.

Does this apply to public schools AND private schools?

since all schools (public & private) in Calif. play under the governing body of CIF (California Interscholastic Federation)...it probably covers all schools.

Sounds racist, considering disproportionate impact. Possibly limit college recruiting from California high schools.
