Tomorrow morning, July 22, 2014, Rear Admiral Jeremiah A. Denton, Jr. will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The services will begin at 8:45 AM at the Old Post Chapel where Senator Jeff Sessions and Representative Sam Johnson are expected to give remarks. The ceremonies will also include a 13 cannon-salute, a 21 gun-salute and a military fly-over.
Admiral Denton, a retired Naval rear admiral and former U.S. senator who survived nearly eight years of captivity in North Vietnamese prisons, and whose public acts of defiance and patriotism came to embody the sacrifices of American POWs in Vietnam, died March 28, 2014 at a hospice in Virginia Beach. He was 89.
President Reagan in his 1st State of the Union address in 1983 stated of Admiral Denton, We dont have to turn to our history books for heroes, they are all around us. One who sits among you here tonight epitomized that heroism ... .
Admiral Denton, also served as the president of the Thomas More Law Centers Citizens Advisory Board. The Thomas More Law Center, a national public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, helped share Dentons commitment to faith, family and the preservation of traditional values.
Admiral Denton, first captured the attention of the nation when in a television appearance orchestrated by the North Vietnamese as propaganda and broadcast in the United States in 1966, he appeared in his prison uniform and blinked the word torture in Morse code a secret message to U.S. military intelligence for which he later received the Navy Cross.
At one point, the reporter asked him what he thought about the so-called Vietnamese War.
Well, I dont know what is happening, Adm. Denton replied. But whatever the position of my government is, I support it fully. . . . I am a member of that government, and it is my job to support it, and I will as long as I live.
Adm. Denton was subjected to four years in solitary confinement. Living in roach- and rat-infested conditions, he endured starvation, delirium and torture sessions that sometimes lasted days.
On Feb. 12, 1973, shortly after the signing of the Paris Peace Accords that helped end U.S. involvement in the war, Adm. Denton and hundreds of other POWs began coming home. He was the first returnee to disembark from the plane at Clark Air Base in the Philippines.
We are profoundly grateful to our commander in chief and to our nation for this day, he said in remarks on behalf of his fellow POWs. God bless America.
Jeremiah Andrew Denton Jr. was born on July 15, 1924, in Mobile, Ala. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1946 and received a masters degree in international affairs from George Washington University in 1964.
He was promoted during his captivity to the rank of captain and later to rear admiral. After the war, he served as commandant of the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Va., and retired from the Navy in 1977.
In addition to the Navy Cross, his honors included the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, three awards of the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
RIP to Admiral Jeremiah Denton, one of the greatest American heroes of the 20th Century. Your sacrifices for your country will never be forgotten.
Is the AHIC going to order flags to half-staff?
When Ted Kennedy died, flags at federal institutions, including the Richard Nixon Presidential Library flew at half-staff.
It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier,
Who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.
By the way, when the Kerrygigolo assumes room temp, we have a burial scheduled for the D.C. waste disposal unit, with a thousand insect “fly” over.
If anyone even thinks of burying that breating excrement package in Arlington...............
Sorry for my rant - but thinking of the Admiral - a man of honor, and then hearing on the radio the latest blather by the Kerrygigolo, I couldn’t resist.
For the Admiral, I give my most sincere salute and farewell.
What a man!
Isn’t it a damn shame that American school children don’t know who Jeremiah Denton is? Since our evil government dishonors heroes such as he was by teaching a perverted history in its schools, it falls to parents and grandparents to teach them about these champions of liberty. Their achievements should not die with their burial.
A hero.
I flew the flags at my house at half-staff for one full week following Admiral Denton’s passing.
[p]residential order or no, it will fly at half-staff tomorrow as well.
You have no reason to apologize.
There are not enough insults in the English language to adequately describe John Kerry.
And, conversely, not enough synonyms for duty and honor to adequately describe Admiral Denton.
Admiral Denton has a connection to my son's college (Christendom College). From their website:
Admiral Denton was a good friend of Christendom College, serving as a member of the College's Board of Advisors for close to 15 years. In 1998, Admiral Denton delivered Christendom's Commencement Address and received the College's Pro Deo et Patria Medal for Distinguished Service to God and Country.
Regards,
A fellow Naval officer that I had the privilege of working with, briefly. Yes, a true hero.
RIP Sir, you are a real American hero.
FU John Kerry
FU Juan McCain, neither of you are worthy enough to carry the Admiral’s water.
All hands muster to pay respects ...
Always thought he should have received the MOH instead of the Navy Cross. As I understand when his captors figured out what he’d done it wasn’t pretty.
Like Admiral Denton the Captain made Rear Admiral and we got to see it deservingly pinned on him at change of command. Robert B Fuller was his name.
Denton, Fuller, and others like them who stood by our nation at all cost are American Hero's who deserve notice in history such.
While these sailor and their fellow POW's were getting the snot beat out of them and tortured our current low life Sec of State was giving aid and comfort to our enemy. Kerry deserves to go down as a Communist Sympathizing Traitor. Such as he should have been barred from ever holding public office or any government employment.
A real hero. Rest in peace, Sir.
