Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee is one of two sites in Massachusetts being considered by Gov. Deval Patrick to house children who cross the border into the United States illegally.
The other site is Camp Edwards, part of a military reservation in Cape Cod.
State Sen. Don Humason, a Westfield Republican who opposes the idea, confirmed that Patrick's office called him Thursday to give him a heads up about the proposal.
Patrick, a Democrat, discussed the proposal during a press conference at 9:45 a.m. providing more details about his intent to accept a request by the U.S. government to shelter unaccompanied minors in Massachusetts.

Patrick said at the press conference that he made the decision for reasons of "love of country and lessons of faith."
Cardinal Sean O'Malley and faith leaders from the Muslim and Jewish communities in Massachusetts joined Patrick at the press conference to support the policy.

It makes sense for the Obama administration to be housing the illegal immigrant children on military bases in states with Democratic governors, such as they’re doing in Massachusetts.
First, the soldiers can’t object if they’re forced to change the children’s diapers or perform other demeaning tasks, since they could be court-martialed for refusing to follow orders. And, for the same reason, soldiers would be unlikely to inform the media if an outbreak of tuberculosis or Ebola should break out on their bases.
Having a Democratic governor like Deval Patrick in change of states housing illegal immigrants is also crucial to assuring that deadly epidemics and other problems do not come to the attention of the media.
When the school year begins, the people of Massachusetts might be a little upset at having their education system
incapacitated by thousands of Hispanic-speaking newcomers flooding their classrooms so that their own children can’t get a decent education. But what will the people of Massachusetts do about it? Vote Republican? Very unlikely.
Westover says they don’t have any room. The Reserve housing that they planned to use is taken up on the weekends.
Most likely they will be sent to Cape Cod where they are up in arms, also.
