Why the Hamas tunnels are first priority in Israel’s ground offensive
The Times of Israel ^ | Friday, July 18, 2014 | Mitch Ginsburg

Israel’s air, sea and land supremacy is not mirrored underground, and the country could have woken up Thursday to an entire kibbutz under siege.

The sight of 13 Hamas terrorists deployed on the Israeli side of the border, a 10-minute march from Kibbutz Sufa on Thursday morning, probably tipped the scales, after 10 days of aerial war, in favor of a ground operation. But addressing the tunnel threat, which Israel’s technology has yet to credibly counter, is only one part of the mission launched Thursday night. The other aspect is to perform that which was not achieved from the air – thinning Hamas’ ranks, depleting its rockets stores and, most significantly, squeezing the Islamist organization so that it comes back to the table with more reasonable demands.

The soldiers and commanders on the western side of the border, inside the Strip, though, cannot consider the application of pressure and the nature of negotiations among their goals. They need concrete aims.

The first and likely most significant is the subterranean threat. Israel could have woken up Thursday to an entire kibbutz under siege. Haim Yellin, the head of the Eshkol Regional Council recently told the Times of Israel, standing outside a tunnel discovered several months ago, that many residents in the region are so scarred by the prospect of a tunnel attack that they hear the phantom scratching of shovels when they close their eyes at night.

As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said, the tunnels are first priority of business, as they are very very important!

[IDF ground forces]... squeezing the Islamist organization so that it comes back to the table with more reasonable demands explodes like the greasy, infected zit that it is.

There... isn't it better after I fixed it?

I know first hand how terrifying the tunnels are to people living near the Gaza border. There’s no iron dome for tunnels, they have to be taken out at the source.

Hamas can build tunnels 60 feet deep and miles long for rockets storage and terrorists sneaking but cannot build 60 feet deep bomb shelters for their kids.

well duhh no wonder so many civilians getting killed.

There are ZERO bomb shelters in Gaza.

I wish we could develop equipment to detect and destroy these tunnels. The North Koreans use them. The Vietnamese used them. The Iraqi’s used them and now the hamas rats are using them.

Also, the Mexicans are using them to get through some of the few secured areas of our border.

Islam was born in the underworld when Mad Mohammad crawled into a cave to listen to the hissings of The Serpent.

They don’t want to protect their people. They want as much death and destruction shown on TV as they can get. They are sick animals.

Imagine if they spent as much effort in farming and industry as they waste with these stupid death tunnels, how much better off they all would be.

Why bring them back to the table? Annihilate them, and all their works. Destroy every last missile and tunnel in Gaza. No basements: they have to build on above ground slabs.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated the objectives, and the long-range objective is to demilitarize Gaza. Now, with Israel lining up with the Egypt-Jordan-Saudi Arabia faction, and favoring the Palestinian Authority (like Egypt has stated that they want at their border), this could be part of that process that Netanyahu is talking about in the “demilitarization” goal.

thinning Hamas’ ranks, depleting its rockets stores and, most significantly, squeezing the Islamist organization so that it comes back to the table with more reasonable demands.

and kicking it all down the road a bit. Right now is the only thing that matters. What happens next year is of no concern.

Apparently, it’s a very arduous and time-consuming task, but is the most important thing right now.

Some sound-based imaging mechanism would work. Ultrasound can image soft structures inches under the skin. Seismic data analysis — using the same principles at a different scale — can image geological structures thousands of feet under the ground. Surely some similar technique would work for tunnels, especially with all the concrete reinforcement they’re talking about.

The Israelis know technology. If they haven’t figured this out by now, I’m a monkey’s uncle.

If allah wills that civilians die then civilians will die. If allah wills that civilians will live then civilians will live. This is why they take no heed for the safety of their wives and children or for themselves. “If allah wills it” is the attitude of the most fatalistic people on earth. Non Christian Asians are fatalistic. Among them the Moslems are the more fatalistic. Among Moslems the Arabs are the most fatalistic. That progression goes for several attitudes.

+1 for your excellent point.

Hamas has dug miles of tunnels, but no bomb-shelters.
