She is just being another "first" by openly proclaiming her disability in an attempt for sympathy and the resultant publicity. Why else would we be discussing Miss Idaho?

Thinking of the mental disability of Miss Teen South Carolina ...

She could also be doing this to raise awareness. She could be a positive example that you can go anywhere and be anything you want to be in spite of diabetes.

She isn’t the “first” to wear a pump. The accompanying article clearly stated Mis Idaho got her inspiration to wear an insulin pump after learning the 1999 Miss America wore one during the beauty pageant competition.

As for Miss Teen South Carolina, she went on to become one of the most famous and recognizable faces (ahem) in the country.

Your cynicism is misplaced, my friend.

I had a woman in my life for 43 years who could have worn the label of “disabled.” She refused to. The things she was unable to do simply opened up an array of other things that she could do. Her friends (and I) knew what was wrong, but the rest of the world saw nothing but grit and determination and her beautiful smile.

She, too, was an Idahoan.
