A new poll identifies four potential Republican presidential candidates for 2016 who stand out in the crowded field of viable contenders.

In a Gallup poll conducted July 7-10 of 1,013 adults, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry were the best known and best liked of 11 candidates tested.

More than 60 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents say they are familiar with each of these politicians, and they all have net favorable ratings of 40 percent or better.

Huckabee has slightly higher familiarity and net favorability rating than the other 10 potential Republican candidates tested, the survey said.

Among those both least known (under 55 percent) and least liked (under 30 percent) are Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have slightly higher favorability ratings but hover below 60 percent in familiarity.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush both have familiarity ratings of over 65 percent but their net favorability ratings are below 30 percent, with Christie having the lowest favorability rating of all the possible candidates tested.

"Less than 70 percent of Republicans and Republican leaners nationwide are familiar with any of the 11 potential GOP candidates tested, even though several actively campaigned for the Republican nomination in 2012, one was the 2012 vice presidential nominee, and others have been visible in the news in recent months," Gallup said in a statement.

The organization also noted that none of the GOP candidates has the same level of name recognition as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vice President Joe Biden.

"This suggests that many Republicans have not yet turned their attention to the next presidential

Mike Huckabee, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry

I wouldn't want any of these, but what about the little Republican primary voters? They can select real losers.

None of them excite me.

Three of them disgust me and the other one...the other one...hell, I can't remember what the other one does!

Of that group, the only one worth anything is Perry.

Perry is easily the best of that lot, which is not saying much. Walker, are you going to get into this thing, or not?

I agree. The others I can understand, but Hucksterbee I cannot. Don’t get me wrong, I actually think Hucksterbee has a pleasant personality and is made for tv.

And in other polls, Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, Chris Christie are ahead.

Add in all the wannabe retreads from 2008 and 2012, and it just shows up what shape the GOP is in — little substance. What do they have to run on — that is believable?

These ‘ahead’ polls go from the most liberal GOP members to the more moderately conservative.

Pollsters like divisiveness among conservative ranks. All potential candidates may bring a share of it.

Huckabee and Santorum bring it best.

Jeff is awesome, seasoned, intelligent and dignified.

What I like best about Jeff is he argues the merits of any case he brings, and gives due respect for his hearers, appealing to their reason and NOT THEIR PITCH FORK, not to inflame their passions and outrage, not for himself, but for the case at hand, itself.

He reminds me of a teacher or professor who truly is interested in educating his students by systematically citing the history, examples and evidence that prove his case.

He really is what we ought to have in a President.

Which is surely why the GOPe would never support Jeff Sessions.

Perry has shown some bluster. He is charming and knows how to talk to the base. Then he wonders off the open range to go break bread with the more liberal big boots and big money in the big cities.

Any real action in Texas has to be forced down his throat.

This is necessary for the UN-doing one of his hair brained schemes he routinely latches on to that benefits the Chamber of Commerce types.

You’re right about the rest, but Cruz comes way head and shoulders above them all.

If Cruz got through the primary into the general, could he get through to the middle mush and the disenchanted Left enough to take down Hillary?
