Mississippi Power is looking for ways to make a positive economic impact as the Kemper Coal Plant is slowly nearing its finish line. The facility has completed construction and is now in the process of testing its equipment. And coal engineers say as they begin, they're doing their best to hire locally.
"We sign long-term contracts with our customer," mine engineer Matt Jones says. "We've got a 40-year contract with Mississippi Power for this operation. We're part of the community, and we want to make sure we're hiring our neighbors as much we can."
At its peak, the coal plant employed approximately 6,000 people, and once the facility opens they'll hold more than 1,000 permanent positions. The plant is already mining coal, and Mississippi Power is using the process to cut down on ratepayer bills.
After mining the coal right here, they're then able to obtain byproducts like sulfuric acid, ammonia and carbon dioxide, which they can then sell. Those profits are factored in to help ratepayers.

CO2 sales!
And all the guys working on CCS (sequestration) never thought of it!
They must have some very fizzy drinks and consume mass quantities of dry ice!
In Texas and other places, we use CO2 injection into the formations to get more oil out of it.

Looks like they are doing the same.

In Saskatchewan as in Mississippi, the CO2 will be pumped underground into a partially depleted oil field andafter it has helped squeeze valuable oil to the surfacestored there indefinitely.
This project may be the biggest and worst con-job in the history of U.S. crony capitalism. Costs are already about double the initial estimate — and that’s before the plant even goes on-line.
Moreover, there’s a strong likelihood that the so-far-unproven technology simply may not work as advertised.
If the Mississippi Public Services Commission doesn’t come to its senses and disallow the inclusion of the obscenely high costs into Miss. Power’s rate-base, homeowners and businesses in the southeastern one-third of MS may end up paying almost double the amount per KWH that’s charged to ratepayers in the rest of the state.
Thanks, Gov. Barbour, thanks legislature, and thanks U. S. Department of Energy, for making this monstrosity a reality.
Non Political MS Ping that is until the EPA shuts it down
Liquid Air( Air Liquide for the foreigners out there), corp makes CO2 down here in Texas for industrial consumption. There have been trucks of it traveling around the highways for decades.
>> Non Political MS Ping <<
I wouldn’t necessarily call it non-political. If the PSC allows the full costs to be counted as part Miss. Power’s rate-base, the voters in MP’s service area may remember that the MS GOP establishment allowed this con-job to go thru. That realization could produce a big windfall of votes for the Dhimms.
>> that is until the EPA shuts it down <<
I imagine the EPA won’t touch it, because the U.S. DOE has been a big booster of the project.
Is this the ‘clean coal’ operation I’ve heard about, using the lower quality coal that’s available locally?
LOL. I love it. Oil companies collecting carbon credits. It don’t get no better than that.
