Just reported the pilot made the decision to fly over that region.

He apparently had the option of changing his route by chose to it anyway.

When “ISIS” was reportedly shelling Baghdad airport, I was watching the radar. Amazing how many civilian aircraft were flying over that airspace (30K ft to other destinations) AND how many were still landing at Baghdad airport. Especially scary concerning all the MiSSING manpads from Libya.
