Well before Mr. Smith went to Washington D.C., politicians and civil servants have set out to change the Washington culture and bring about serious change, only to be ensnared in it themselves. Between the Georgetown dinner parties, the media obsession with the city that borders on self-parody, and the allure of power and prestige, the DC experience has proven itself to be an intoxicating one for even the most civic minded bureaucrat. While there have been calls to change the culture of the city for nearly as long as it has existed, few real solutions have been put forward to do so. Instead of holier than thou rhetoric calling on the citizens of DC to take a look in the mirror and change their ways, what if we simply moved several major administrative department out of the city and into the regions that better reflect the mission the department is dedicated to?
A relocation of several departments would have several benefits. First and foremost, the spreading out of these departments would help to decrease the bubble that many top Washington bureaucrats currently live in and serve to hamper the existing DC culture from swallowing up any more of our civil servants. Second, being located in a city or region that is already central to that departments focus would serve to further increase coordination and communication between the two without an entire stable of lobbyists permanently stationed in Washington D.C. Finally, it would dramatically increase national security. In event of a large attack on D.C., the entire central governmental structure would be at risk of being lost as it stands now. With most departments spread out across the United States, the risk of every one of them being lost in one fell

I have a great place for most of the federal government to go: OBLIVION!!!
They should move congress and president also, probalby in Nebraska, center of country.. Make DC a tourist atrraction
Nah ..they should all go to Hell..after all everything they run turns in to Hell so they must be home sick
My former congressman from the now-defunct PA 19th district commuted every day (except for about a dozen winter days) during his 6 terms to avoid being drawn into the DC culture.
I had a thought once that if I was ever president, I would set up a federal building in Barrow. Since it is notoriously hard to fire federal employees, I could get rid of Lois Lerner types by transferring them to Barrow until they quit or retired.
God help me, but my reaction to that is tending toward
“...problem?”
We have federal agencies all over the nation.
Really what is in DC are the senior bureaucrats.
I wouldn’t mind though as traffic would die down and the jackasses the rest of the country sends here would be gone
We need to move everything out of DC since the TSA says DC is not a part of the USA.
The IRS being courted by Rick Perry...”Come on down to Texas!”.
Interesting ideas, though I would say that the obvious place for the Department of Energy would be in New Mexico (it always amazes me how few people seem to know the DOE’s most important mission).
I’m with you on the traffic, though. It would be nice to watch the insufferable twinks leave. No more Mercedes SUV’s the size of Wyoming with bumper stickers saying “Live simply”. No more parents who camp out all night to get their kids into the right art camp, but think poor Black kids should not have options to escape inner-city schools. No more Coexist bumper stickers. No more Toyota Pius’s. Lovin’ it already!
Maybe HHS should move to Florida to take care of all the retirees lol
Yeah but with tens of thousands in D.C., can you imagine reducing the total population of D.C. by 1/6? The senior bureaucrats would probably stay, but the machinery would be gone.
Agree with you on DOE, it should be out west.
