Service Employees International Union targets four House Republicans

The Service Employees International Union will launch a new ad campaign Tuesday pummeling four House Republican lawmakers over their chamber’s inaction on immigration reform this year — part of a broader attempt to wield the political influence of Latinos in key congressional races. The union is targeting Republican Reps. Cory Gardner and Mike Coffman of Colorado, as well as David Valadao of California and Joe Heck of Nevada with a round of Spanish-language television ads that will run for about two weeks, SEIU officials said. The ad buy is in the mid-six figures.

Gardner is running for the U.S. Senate, challenging Democratic Sen. Mark Udall in the one Senate race where immigration could play an influential role in November. The other three are vying for reelection in districts with a significant population of Latino voters.

“We believe this group of Republicans have clearly been a part of the blocking that has gone on by Republicans in the House around this issue,” Brandon Davis, the SEIU’s national political director, said in an interview Monday. “We plan to make that clear to voters.”

Personalized versions of the ads naming Gardner, Coffman, Valadao and Heck will run in their respective home turfs, and a general edition of the ad will run on Spanish-language TV networks nationwide.

The national version of the 30-second ad features images of the four targeted House Republicans, who are then contrasted with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a prominent immigration hardliner.

“The actions of Republicans in Congress, remind me my grandma’s saying: Tell me who you’re with, and I’ll tell you who you are,” the ad’s female narrator says, according to a translation provided by SEIU. “Why? Because Republicans again and again insult our community, and blocked immigration reform.

“And the worst: They have voted against our future and our Dreamers,” the ad continues. “This November, we must go to the polls and vote against Republicans.”

Of the four lawmakers, Valadao has leaned out the most on immigration reform — becoming one of just three House Republicans to co-sponsor a comprehensive immigration overhaul bill spearheaded by House Democrats.

Still, union officials indicated that Valadao’s past support for comprehensive immigration reform wouldn’t matter as long as his party failed to bring legislation to the House floor.

“This is a set of Republicans [who] have to face a large constituency in the Latino community,” said Rocio Saenz, an SEIU executive vice president. “Quite frankly, this is about their party.”

Non-citizens caught voting should be tried and executed for voter fraud, espionage, sabotage, RICO violations — whatever it takes.

‘Brandon Davis, the SEIU’s national political director’.

I didn’t realize Unions had political directors. Yes, I am naive.
