Airbus Seeking Patent For Bicycle Seats Because Flying Isn’t Uncomfortable Enough Already
The Consumerist ^ | 14 July 2014 | Mary Beth Quirk

While you’re fighting for territory on the arm rest and suffering the kicks, nudges and otherwise annoying seat disturbances that come with flying commercial airlines, just think… it could be worse. How much worse? Like perching on a bicycle seat worse.

Airbus submitted a patent in Europe for the seats, with have small backrests but no tray tables or headrest, reports the Los Angeles Times. And legroom? Keep dreaming.

The pared down design is an attempt to cut down on bulk, which in turn allows for more sardined passengers and ostensibly, more money.

“In effect, to increase the number of cabin seats, the space allotted to each passenger must be reduced,” the patent application states.

You ever had a “local” flight on an asian airline?

The airline market seems to have completely skipped the middle niche.

When I go out to eat, I have a choice not only between a convenience store hot dog or a $100 steak, but lots of selections in between.

I would go back to flying (have not flown since 2006) if I could pay 25% more than sardine class, and get 25% more comfort.

Where else can you get to be treated like a terrorist by the TSA, a herded sheep by the airline and pay an exorbitant price for the privilege. I won’t fly, period.

That was my thought as well...

And, at the end of the flight, you’d be reimbursed a portion of the fuel charge based on your particular “output”.

Airlines have been doing business class for years, but not enough people will pay more for it. A shopping tool that let consumers sort on other factors like legroom, comfort and convenience would help. Airlines will respond to what sells. But as long as people make their purchase based on nothing but lowest price then that’s how airlines have to manage their product.

That's because there are lots of people like you and me that are willing to pay a middle price for a middle meal that's more than a hot dog. But that's not how people shop for airline seats. If everyone was only willing to pay the price of a hot dog, then those restaurants in the middle would start selling just hot dogs too.
