“We must be color brave.”

Radicals still occupy Capital Beltway University.. having the buildings gives them the power, the radicals say.

Black Power!

DoJ renamed to Department of Just Us and Our People

Take 10 7.69!

Black radicals' "Take 10!" was when blacks were 10 percent of the population now it's closer to 13%.

Is there anything on the Maple's bark which looks like this?

Crawlers are active May-August, and need to be killed in that period, or a return infestation will occur the following spring.

Using an old table knife's dull edge, scrape as many off wo/ injuring bark, and into a plastic bag, wiping-off knife on newspaper. BURN the bag.

Wear eye protection; use rubber gloves.

Spray Malathion and Liquid Sevin, per directions for scale, on alternating weeks to kill crawlers. Females will have laid purple egg masses in protective waxy shells for hatching in following spring. Scrape those off too and dispose. Look closely for any moving insects to spray/drench.

If any sections of leaves are very heavily infested, prune those sections out and put in burn bag. If branches or limbs are badly infested, scrape first, then spray and check weekly for crawlers.

In Jan-Feb, before leaf buds open, apply Insecticidal Oil to entire tree, to smother hatching crawler eggs in May.

Nearby, infested plants may have to be removed to save Jap Maple. Broadleaf Hollies were particularly hit hard by scale late last summer/fall, and again this spring, and must be removed if too far gone.

Any of these white bumps on the bark, branches, limbs?

Or is it more like this:

I need pics to determine what genus of scale, and what steps to take, what chemicals and oils to recommend.

Or like this:

Nope none of those. Maybe I better get someone out here because spraying around the Koi could be an issue too. Is there any national service that won’t rip me off?

okay. If you can get shots of surrounding plants also infested, pls do so. Some of them may need to be treated, or be removed so as not to transfer the scale to your JM. If it’s the JM in the pic you showed me last year, that’s worth saving; the others can be replaced.

Most nat'l tree/lawn services are crap and they will just up-sell you on all kinds of useless services.

Is there a VA University Extension Office nearby? Or look for Certified Arborists in your Richmond (?) area...

“...wings are on the side parallel with the torso...”

Scale are crawlers; no wings. That’s why I need close-ups to ID the insects.

Appears to be some kind of scale.

Read this.

You’ll probably want to use an all season oil spray.

I need a professional. The tree is too tall for me to spray.

Sounds like you have to soak down the plant pretty good for it to work. A commercial or truck mounted sprayer might be needed for a tall tree.

Any of this look familiar?

It doesn’t look like that. I’ve seen those pics and these are different. Calling the VA Extension tomorrow.

Congrats to Captainpaintball For Winning The Mark Levin Show Thread Kitchen Aid Blender Award For Best Thread Posting For July 16, 2014. :)=^..^=

I thank you for your patience, and understanding. I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass-holder, (is that racist?) but I am starting to lose sleep and sanity over this.

Please bear with me. I KNOW what he says. I have memorized it. And your transcription is exactly how I think it should be. But for some reason the announcer stutters after "leader", and it sounds like :We've once again made contact with our leader-dih-dih..." MARK LEVIN!!!!!

I think I'm going to have to call the show. I can not handle this any longer...

Heh; they’ll do that to ya.

I used to go out walking thru the orchards and nursery and by the time I sat back down in my office, I had 15030 ticks in my hair, crawling around my panama hat and all over my clothes. They’d drop off right on to my desk, never bite, and I’d zap ‘em with a Bic lighter in the ashtray.

A shower helps...

They do, but they also have an affiliated ‘Master Gardeners’ organization, which helps with public questions and problems.

Two ways to treat scale:

1) Chemicals + dormant oil spray = fast control and quick resolution. Good for non-pollenating (bees) situations, so they won’t be affected by Malathion or Sevin.
2) Dormant oil applications, for bee pollenation situations, take much longer and aren’t as effective, but safer.

Without seeing your infestation in-person, in the detail I need to made an accurate assessment, I can’t advise you which to use. Being there, I could size-it-up in 5-6mins.

Make sure the Certified Arborist, if you go that route, has a VA Pesticide Applicator’s License, as I had while in business.
