Islamic Jihad leader says group would agree to truce with Israel if "aggression" on Gaza stops, border crossings reopened; official in Ramallah says Hamas has appeal to Qatar, Egypt and Turkey to help reach deal.

The Palestinian Authority said Monday that the countdown for reaching a new ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has begun.

“Hamas is desperate for a ceasefire,” a Palestinian official in Ramallah said. “They have appealed to Qatar, Egypt and Turkey to help in reaching a new truce with Israel.”

The official claimed that Hamas has been under heavy pressure from Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who have “paid an unusually heavy price” during the fighting.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad officials reiterated their readiness to reach an agreement that would end the current fighting with Israel.

Islamic Jihad leader Ramadan Shalah said that his organization would agree to a new truce with Israel if the “aggression” on the Gaza Strip stopped and the border crossings are reopened.

I don’t know why Israel would ever open its border.

If I recall a-right, they semi-opened it for workers, but too many turned out to be terrorists, working for a while, and then going postal. So, they had to close it.

All I can think of is: If you’re getting stuck in a hole, stop digging is the first thing you do.

If you want Israel to stop, simply stop firing rockets at them.

I think Israel might need two, or four weeks to mull that one over.

In the mean time......

Hamas can stop shooting anytime. Even a unilateral cease-fire immediately cuts the violence.

Classic tactic discussed in the Koran, to surrender and retreat to resupply and regroup is an honorable thing. At least that is what the Koran says.

So Hamas tried an ineffective cheap shot against Israel, then when Israel gives it a black eye, it starts squealing like a stuck pig.

Not a whole lot of sympathy here. We can but only hope that Israel really flattens them up so much that there is little left but dog food.

Our two greatest presidents — George Washington and Abraham Lincoln — demanded complete, unconditional surrender from the enemies they fought against — Great Britain and the South — because they knew that that was the ONLY way to assure that peace would be restored and the soldiers could go home.

The leaders of those presidents’ enemies were honorable men — George III and Robert E. Lee — and so they agreed to surrender rather than keep fighting and destroy their own people.

If Benjamin Netanyahu emulates our greatest presidents, he, too, will demand complete, unconditional surrender from Hamas. The fact that the leaders of Hamas are not honorable men like George III and Robert E. Lee, but instead bloodthirsty terrorists, is Hamas’s problem and that of its poor Palestinians subjects.

Israel would not have gotten into the mess it’s been in for the past 20-plus years if it had refused to negotiate with terrorists — that is, if it had refused to get involved in the endless peace processes that America’s presidents, starting with Bill Clinton and his obsession with building a presidential legacy and winning a Nobel Peace Prize, pressured them into taking part in.

Twenty-years ago, in the pre-Iron Dome era when Israel was completely dependent on the U.S. for its defense, Israel had no choice but to let itself be used as a pawn in U.S. presidential legacy-building.

But those times are over. There is no excuse now for Benjamin Netanyahu not to take his place beside America’s Washington and Lincoln as a great leader who refused to stop fighting until his enemy completely surrendered so that a genuine peace could be established.

Hamas desperate for ceasefire

Now is a good time for Netanyahu to announce his upcoming two week vacation. It seems to work for Obama, right?

They should keep up the pressure until the Palestinians make Hamas leave Gaza.

They should keep up the pressure until the heads of the Hamas leadership are delivered to the Israeli border crossing point.

Reminds me of a joke.

How can you spot a moderate muslim?

He's run out of ammunition.
