It wasnt a friendly meeting between Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and businessman David Perdue on Sunday evening as they faced off in the only debate of the Georgia GOP Senate runoff.
Both used the lone opportunity ahead of next Tuesdays vote to wage personal attacks against their opponent. Kingston targeted Perdue, a former Fortune 500 CEO, as an out of touch businessman only concerned with his own profit. Perdue fired back, accusing the congressman of being a "career politician" who has accomplished little in his 11 terms in office.
Hosted by the Atlanta Press Club and televised on Georgia Public Broadcasting, the half hour debate turned ugly quickly, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. When the candidates were given a chance to question each other, both introduced brutal personal attacks.
Perdue questioned Kingston about an investigation that showed the congressman allegedly received more than $80,000 in campaign donations from companies owned by a convicted felon facing deportation. Perdue urged Kingston to "come clean" about the incident, implying that the donor, Khalid Satary, wanted to buy Kingston's help.
"It's pretty obvious," Perdue said. "If you have money and you want to buy favor or influence, Jack Kingston is open for business."
Kingston reminded Perdue and the audience that his campaign voluntarily returned the money in question and was adamant that Satary "is not a donor to our campaign."
Then Kingston hit back with his own question, suggesting Perdue benefitted economically from a "sweetheart, insider appointment" to the Georgia Ports Authority board while his first cousin, former Gov. Sonny Perdue (R), was the state's governor. Perdue dismissed the question, saying there was "absolutely nothing to" the attack.

Any Freepers out there have any insights on this race?
Here’s Kingston’s ratings:
83% (Average) - 84% (Heritage) - 87% (CFG) - 91% (ACU) - 71% (FreedomWorks)
Kingston has been in office for over 20 years and is a part of the RINO establishment.
Perdue is not much better. He is not a career politician, but is a cousin to our former Governor Sonny Perdue (alias Gov. Chickenbone)
I agree.... both candidates suck :( sigh.......
(Dare I say I am quite willing to vote for the lesser of two evils in order to avoid the greater evil?)
Interested in the answer. I don’t know much about Perdue except he is a businessman and Sonny Perdue’s cousin .
I haven’t paid as much attention as I should because I am taking care of my elderly in-laws, one of which has Alzheimer’s. In that light, my inclination would be to vote for Kingston instead of the unknown.
Perdue is worse.
He’s a total reach across the isle man. Total. A CEO - he is not skilled at working with others - he’s used to telling others what to do. He would make a less bad governor.
Kingston, although a longtime pol, will not stab us in the back like Chambless or Isakson.
I say Kingston wins 52-48.
I am going to disagree. With Perdue being a political outsider, he will not have ‘allies’ that will coach him. He will have to work harder.
I am tired of re-tread politicians who have been around for too long.
I am going with Perdue and I hope I do not regret my choice. I am confident that Kingston will bend over for the Chamber of Commerce.
Ok I see the opposite way - so it goes. I think either can beat Nunn.
FYI though perdue is not an “outsider” - he’s been the capitalism part of crony capitalism. IMO he’s a 100% GOPE.
Thank you, that is about where I am. You say above you believe either can beat Nunn, and I would certainly hope so.
But, lets take the longer view, particularly in light of recent (20yrs) events, and talk about which of the two would appear to give us the best representation.
Kingston's voting record offers some assurance, but is there a chance Purdue represents an aggressive new approach that might better light or even support a fire under the Repubs?
It may not be possible at this point for such a fire, given the leadership and in the absence of a "Contract", but is Kingston nonetheless the best choice for even just maintaining a holding action?
I have bought a lot of Perdue chicken, one would think I could get the spelling correct.
As a Georgian, I lose either way. All three candidates will do our great state more harm than good.
I think Kingston will do less damage than Perdue [and no worries about the typo I’m a Boilermaker fan!]
Perdue is not seen with Cruz, Lee, et al. He doesn’t think like them. He thinks like Chambless [think gang of 8.]
In any event, we’ll hope for the best...
Career politician vs. rich, left-wing businessman using his political name.
To be honest it probably doesn’t really matter, they are both equally worthless.
Thank you for your “worthless” comment.
Ok genius please enlighten me, which one of these attention power mad money grubbers will “help” us best?
Both have been bought and sold by various corporations, hell they are just RINO’s in training..
You sound like the kind of person I really want to waste my time trying to enlighten. Good luck with your attitude, and have a nice day.
Morning all - is the debate available online anywhere? Am still weighing these two, *and finding them wanting : /, and probably will be right up to the moment my finger touches the screen :(
