I lost one of my dear Rhodesians the same way. One minutes she was up walking around the next time I looked at her, maybe 10 minutes later, she was dead in her bed.

I’m still not over my 15 year old standard poodle, Jazz, who I had to put down on Christmas Eve 2010. Jazz was spectacular to see - she had beat over 1300 other dogs at a show with the owner who had her before I got her at the age of 4.
Now I have another standard poodle because I figured being dogless would just make it worse. New dog is Paris and she is sweet, adorable and loving. Totally different personality from Jazz - who could be quite sneaky - especially in pursuit of food. Oh how I love her still.
I figure dogs are God’s special gift to us - I just wish they lived longer.

I only wish they could all die like that. Seems like there is always the suffering that we all go thru and the decisions about putting them down or not. It’s all just horrible. We lost one this past November. His companion dog, my baby was never here without him. He was only 10.
I don’t know anything about how bad off he was, but if he could enjoy life, and eat, and still get around, and seem to manage the pain, I’d have let him have more time.
Everybody needs to know but I take my cues from them. It didn’t seem like he was giving off the “I’m ready to go now” vibes. Some may wish to avoid getting to this point, but they need to admit it’s because THEY can’t deal with getting to that point, not that the animal can’t.
Sweet dog. I now have a three legger since five weeks ago.
It was eighteen months that I had to do what every pet owner lives in dread of, I had to put down my beloved Spencer at the age of 17 years, two months and ten days. Spence was a miniature poodle that was four months old, when I got him. To this day, I still don’t know who selected whom. He became my “Little Buddy”, and as he started to age, and things started to happen and as the the things he was able to do, he could no longer do, I started thinking that one day, I would have to do what I’d been dreading.
Spence was my first dog. By that, I mean, I was alone when I got him, but when I remarried later on, he accepted everyone as his own, but whenever I left the room, he followed me. Spence hated being my himself, during the day. He was never destructive, but he loved his humans and it’s been agreed that when it’s my time to cross the bar, his ashes will be placed in my coffin so that he’ll never been alone.
Even though, we’ve gotten another dog, since Spence passed, I still miss him. I just wish that more people were like dogs.
Thanks. Tears again. It’s like my Mom once said, you love them like family and they just don’t live long enough.
Last Thursday evening, my neighbor who lives in the apartment behind mine knocked on my door. I’ve lived here 10 years and she has never done that before. When I opened the door, she just stood there with a sad look on her face and I knew that she had had to put her fur baby down. I invited her in and both of us just stood there in the hallway, hugging each other and crying like babies. I felt so bad for her and I knew how she felt because I’ve had to go through the same pain 3 times and it never gets any easier. Even my cat, who hides from everybody, ventured out and sat next to her on the sofa. I think she knew my neighbor was hurting.
You know, I’ve thought of the same thing, burying my dogs with me. Jazz was my significant other and to this day I have her collar in my purse. I used to sing to her when we went for our evening walk...”me and my shadow...”. She put up with this. :-)
I think she saved my life one night - woke me up and I realized I was heaving trying to breathe. Very strange and not sure what caused it. But I thought she wanted out but after I finally caught my breath she just looked at me - she hadn’t wanted to go out after all. So that’s when I realized she knew something was wrong with my breathing and took it upon herself to wake me up.
I hope there are dogs in heaven!
Mine does.... And cries right along with me.
I have the best vet on earth.

Now I’m sitting here bawling in the AutoZone parking lot.
But I got it anyway.

On my birthday, July 30, 1984, I lost my BFF Dobe and for every year since, I have hated and dreaded that day.
It has not gotten better or easier.
It’s just gotten longer.
I miss you Tito.
You were the best dog ever.

Yeah, there’s a certain nobility in quitting while you’re ahead. LOL
Had the vet come to the house when I had to put down my 12.5 yo yellow lab. Hardest thing I’ve ever done ... but it was time. Best way to do it IMNSHO.
Tears streaming down watching this. Have a 3 yo chocolate lab now but waited three years before getting her. Took lots of time to be ready.
Cat is 14.75 yo now, a record for us. Spousal unit says this is the last cat so I spend extra time with the cat while I have her around. She has a tumor and can’t jump up on the bed anymore, but she still curls up next to me when I nap.
Our pets are a gift, and their passing, although hard, are a reminder to enjoy them while we have them around.
