'We're really sorry': US sends 14,000 draft notices to men born in 1800s

No, the United States isn't trying to build a military force of centenarians.

It just seems that way after the Selective Service System mistakenly sent notices to more than 14,000 Pennsylvania men born between 1893 and 1897, ordering them to register for the nation's military draft and warning that failure to do so is "punishable by a fine and imprisonment."

The agency realized the error when it began receiving calls from bewildered relatives last week.

Yay! A real Y2K glitch!

I did a lot of Y2K remediation back in the day. I’ve wondered why we’ve not heard more little stories like this since then.

The Selective Service only gave a half answer. It explained that the wrong years had been selected but did not explain why they would send out any draft notices at all.

I believe this were registration notices, not draft notices.

Under obama orders they must be gearing up the computers TO SEND OUT draft notices. They are just so screwed up we can thank God this is a forewarning for conservatives...

If Teddy Roosevelt were still in active service, they wouldn’t need to draft 14,000 men. 12,000 would suffice.

Whew! My late paternal grandfather, born in Philadelphia in 1898, missed the cut! He’ll be greatly relieved!

Since Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot two weeks ago and the Austro-Hungarian Empire is making demands on Serbia we are looking at Europe stumbling into a great war. Of course we need a draft.

They were way too old for the WII draft and some might have already received a draft notice for WWI. My grandfather received a draft notice but was deferred because he was missing several key toes (important for the infantry) which he accidently severed cutting wood barefoot as a 12-year old.

Probably was the voter rolls. My grandfather was born in 1886, lifetime republican. I’m guessing that when he died in 1986 that his name immediately went onto the Missouri democrat voter rolls.

Maybe they were the same computers that sent my wife one of those ‘You must register for Selective Service or we’re coming to get you’ letters when she turned 18 in 1984.

Indeed...am reminded of an All in the Family episode where a computer glitch related to a coupon for prunes kept sending quarters to Edith. Then another computer glitch “pronounced Archie dead” —at least the V.A. seemed to think he was. They got that straightened out. As for the Edith situation, they did stop sending her quarters...now they were sending her
prunes.
