The Daily Kos twerps are going NUTZ over that photo, especially the bullet-proof vests. Yet, I don’t see any of THEM walking along the border with their iPhones in plain sight....

Unfortunately the picture of Gov Perry and Sean Hannity is nothing more than a ratings ploy (and an early shot at the Presidential race for Gov Perry).
There now is no reasonable way to stop this incursion militarily, unless we wish to be monsters in this situation, where it’s open season on the border, with free license to shoot to kill (as the OP implies). It just can’t happen for the simple fact that once a few get shot, and die crossing the border word will spread quickly among the illegals that suddenly the Americans are shooting to kill.
There are huge numbers massed at or near the border now. If such word spreads they will stop coming over of course (except for a brave/crazy few) but this will cause a huge, real humanitarian crisis there, right inside the border.
Then as conditions progressively worsen even further, the mass of people will become so desperate that they will flood across all at once, with us left with only two choices: mow them down like a scene from WWI, or let them all through which is where we are now, but they will be immensely more desperate and violent than they are now. And they won’t be children streaming across either but all of them.
Unfortunately when this whole mess started to unravel and no one took any serious steps to curb it, the die was cast. Now we pretty much are stuck with those who are here and continue to come here.
The only reasonable way out of this mess is to start securing the border in an organized technological fashion which starts with constructing a much more stable and complete fence than we have now. Also, deportations need to rise. This way, GRADUALLY the illegals will stop coming. Thus preventing a true humanitarian crisis which can only end badly. For everyone.

At the rate you're suggesting, it'd be closer to World War Z. Given what they're doing to drag down the US and their willful disregard of the law, we would be doing them a favor.

That, as well as the general withdrawal of benefits towards illegals, an actual effort to enforce the law, and the termination of guest worker programs. That, and I'd be asking countries like Australia and Israel about how they handle illegal intrusion and fencing - friendly countries that deal with this kind of problem.
With all of this said, this definitely makes a case to revisit introduction of SB1070-like laws. Self-deportation works well as a disincentive towards illegal entry and/or presence.

Many take the time to post articles on FR so that we are informed. Some readers respond with complaints, some grumble to themselves but in this case I chose to send an email. I would like to hope that I’m not the only one taking them to task over this issue.
League City is in my backyard and they need all the support they can get. What CNN does or doesn’t do with my email is obviously up to them. I did what I felt was possible within my abilities.
I had some left wing idiot tell me that “they’re kids, they’re all 4-5 years old” with a straight face!
I said, “ right, 300,000 5 year old kids left Central Am and walked all hundreds of miles north through Mexico”. Everyone in the group started laughing at the idiot.
