One wonders how many of the people buying these can't afford their college loans, utility bills, mortgages etc.

I try to be sensible about money stuff. Buying that TV is fine, if you can pay cash....it's not a necessity. Since the guy they interviewed is talking about what he'll cut from his budget to pay for it, one can assume it's not a cash purchase.

Haven't people learned yet that debt is bad?

Cut the cable and I imagine you could pay off a $1500 purchase fairly quickly.
