Poverty and lack of education let one in five girls married before the age of 15 in Nigeria
By the time she ran away, Maimuna bore the scars of a short but brutal marriage.
Her battered face swelled so much that doctors feared her husband had dislocated her jaw. Her back and arms bristled with angry welts from the whipping her father gave her for fleeing to him. She was gaunt from hunger, dressed in filthy rags. And barely a year after her wedding, she was divorced.
It would be a tragic story for a woman of any age. But for Maimuna Abdullahi, it all happened by the time she was 14.

In other words ... fun with statistics! ... outside the Moslem areas, the rate of child marriage is far lower than one in five.
Sounds like an Islam problem, not a poverty problem.
But that’s their culture, and according to the left, no culture is any better than any other.
Not quite what they say. As they consider any and all other cultures superior to ours.
Traditional American culture is the source of all evil.
What can you say about the combination of African culture and Islam. Look at what it is doing to this country and there is another 2.5 years ahead.
From the United Nations:
Culture is, therefore, an inextricable part of the complex notion of sustainability. It can be seen as an arbiter in the difficult trade-offs between conflicting ends with regard to development goals. As pointed out in the report of the World Commission on Culture and Development set up jointly by UNESCO and the United Nations, culture is not only the servant of ends but ( ) the social basis of the ends themselves, a factor of development but also the fountain of our progress and creativity.

Either that or the new caliphate will rewrite UNESCO. Probably the latter.
Child marriage is an intrinsic part of Islamic culture, for several reasons:
1) Mohammod married Aisha at 6, so it's OK, because Mo is the ideal Muslim man.
2) The groom is required to pay for his bride (mahr, often mis-translated as dowry). The money is supposed to go to the girl, but usually goes to her father. This creates a financial incentive to marry them off as soon as a well paying groom is found.
3) A non-virgin has much-reduced status as a bride, and will fetch a much-lower price. Every year a girl stays unmarried increases the risk of her losing her virginity and becoming valueless. (This is also a frequent cause of "honor killing").
Notice that the worst areas for forcing children into marriage is in the Muslim north where beating and even killing your wife is acceptable.
Good point about the bride-price and maintenance of virginity.
Many cultures in many parts of the world have seen marriage for teenaged girls, so it’s not as if it’s unique to Islam. However, the difference between Moslem and non-Moslem areas of Nigeria in very indicative.
Another aspect is that Muslim girls are more likely to be restricted to the house. Non-Muslim girls can hold a job and contribute to family income. Muslim girls are an economic drain to their families until they get married off.
That’s another good point.
All evil all the time.
