Polar bears in the arctic, emperor penguins in the Antarctic ... it never stops.

(BTW, having seen "March of the Penguins" and how they survive (barely) months of wind and frigid temperatures, not sure how warming is going to be detrimental to the emperors.)

I think the writer is counting on not many people being aware of just how close to death they become as part of their natural breeding cycle. More ice could put the females a day or two further from returning to the males and young which could be enough to wipe out an entire flock.
