I am not sure this qualifies as a lie. When I explain my portfolio to people, I say I have 5 Mutual funds and 6 individual stocks (McDonalds, Walmart, Harley Davidson, P&G, Jostens, and Mattel). Most people consider stocks separate from Mutual funds
