If Sarah Palin were to run for president she would already have between 30 and 35 percent of the vote without spending a dime. So how do you get the magical next 16 to 21 percent without selling out to special interests?
By standing for something. The current Republican Party has lost substance. They still play the same ole rhetoric -- lower taxes, smaller government, yada yada yada. "Read my lips" and Medicare Drug bill and formation of the MASSIVE Homeland Security Dept nullify that.
A candidate who could effectively stand for conservative values could easily pick up a large number of the ole Reagan/Blue Dog Democrats. They still hold on to their party identity because of family tradition, not because they like the direction the Dem Party has been going to last half-century.
Several 3rd parties have had strong candidates, but those parties were formed around those strong candidates. When those candidates faltered, the party lost.
American Party - George Wallace was running strong until he was shot
Reform Party - Ross Perot was running strong until he dropped out, reentered.
The two major political parties only have about 25% of the voter pool as their members. That leaves around 50% who identify themselves as independents -- some leaning Democratic, some leading Republican, some leaning Libertarian, some just complete nutcases.
A 3rd party? We know voting for the same and expecting a different result doesn't work. The only difference between the 2 major parties is the speed at which they are fundamentally changing the foundation of the United States of America.

To me, the necessity of a third party follows from the ABSOLUTE NEED to destroy the Republican Party as it currently exists. But I do think it’s a two-step process and for that reason its tough for many to fathom.
I will say this: I am hoping Mitch McConnell loses in Kentucky this fall. THAT is how far I’ve come at this point. And I appreciate that not everyone will agree.
Now Rand Paul saying everyone needs to be for immigration reform, what a putz. We already have laws on the books,he’s out of it.
