Rand Paul: I Don't Blame Obama for Iraq Turmoil [NBC Goes To Town With This Byline!]

Rand Paul: I Don't Blame Obama for Iraq Turmoil BY CARRIE DANN Sen. Rand Paul says he doesn’t blame President Barack Obama for the ongoing turmoil in Iraq and that former Vice President Dick Cheney and other proponents of the Iraq War should ask themselves the same questions Cheney is raising now about the conflict.

“What’s going on now -- I don’t blame on President Obama,” Paul said in an interview with NBC’s David Gregory to air on “Meet the Press” Sunday. “Has he really got the solution? Maybe there is no solution. But I do blame the Iraq War on the chaos that is in the Middle East."

In an op-ed this week authored with his daughter Liz, Cheney wrote of Obama that "rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many."

Paul, a possible 2016 presidential candidate known for his breaks with Republican defense hawks on foreign policy, said that Cheney’s criticism of the president’s strategy should also be questioned. Cheney is widely credited as a key architect of the 2003 war.

“I think the same questions could be asked of those who supported the Iraq War,” Paul said. “You know, were they right in their predictions? Were there weapons of mass destruction there? That’s what the war was sold on. Was democracy easily achievable? Was the war won in 2005, when many of these people said it was won? They didn’t really, I think, understand the civil war that would break out.”

“United Nations Security Council Resolution 687 passed in April 1991 established formal cease-fire terms at the close of Operation Desert Storm. The controversies over enforcing this and subsequent resolutions would lead to the outbreak of another war 12 years later.” So reads the wikipedia article on the Iraq/Kuwait War (Desert Storm) The WMD controversy that has been cemented over the years gives the dims and the UN that voted for this mess cover, while leaving Bush and Cheney as the sole responsible parties - according to the Rand Pauls of the world. He’s just doing anti-war simpleminded lip-service to gain that all important “independent” voter. What does Rand Paul know about anything outside of his fantasies?

What should have happened since we were hell bent on going to Iraq in the first place, when we caught Saddam, tried and hung him it was time to saddle up and head for the house and let the rag heads sort their own s*** out.

He didn’t say he blamed the chaos on the Iraq war. He said he blamed the (current) Iraq war on the chaos there. You seem to have read that backwards.

As easy as it is to want to blame Obama, the truth is it was Bush who set the withdrawal timetable, and the elected government of Iraq didn’t want to extend it. The Shiites couldn’t wait to boot the Sunnis out of any power in the government, which is why the Sunni troops don’t consider fighting ISIS their battle. Both sides wanted us out so they could get back to killing each other.

Ironically, Joe Biden may have been right about something for the only time in his life when he suggested the only long term solution might be splitting Iraq into Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish states. OTOH, as long as Muslims are killing each other, we can hope they will be too busy to cause us trouble.

So why did Rand Paul do that filibuster if Obama has no control of military decisions?

I considered that reading, which is closer to his words, but in context that really didn't make much sense.

What's going on there now is not a war exactly, chaos would be more accurate. The Iraq war ended when Iraq surrendered.

I think he just phrased it awkwardly. Watching the video, immediately after he says that he continues with "these are the people" and he's talking about it Cheney etc.

To me, it's clear that he's blaming the current chaos on the Iraq war Cheney supported.
