According to this there are still around 500 Marines and sailors they still can’t find on Tarawa.
I am pretty sure that most of them were “destroyed” in the battle or got washed out to sea.
I just found it “funny” to imagine someone trying to desert on the island. I can only imagine some gunny standing at the loading gate of any craft leaving the beach in case someone want to get a ride back to the ships.
