T-Mobile offers free Apple iPhones for network ‘test drive’

T-Mobile US Inc. on Wednesday announced a seven-day free trial program to get potential customers to “test drive” its wireless network.

The deal requires a consumer to provide a credit-card number online and delivers an iPhone 5S in the mail for use over the seven days, the company said. Return the phone to a T-Mobile store and no charges will be assessed.

“We’re not trying to make money on this,” T-Mobile chief executive John Legere said at a kickoff event in Seattle.

The company hopes consumers who use T-Mobile’s data network under the program will find that it is faster than their current carrier’s network and switch to T-Mobile.

There is a grace period on returning the phone and “a little scratch” won’t be a problem, Legere said.

T-Mobile has been attracting new customers with its marketing efforts dubbed “Un-carrier.” Some of its changes have been adopted by the other national carriers, such as faster phone upgrades and equipment installment plans.

Legere said Apple Inc. is supplying the iPhones free and that he expects to have 1 million test drives through the promotion.

The company also said it would no longer count streaming music against customers’ data usage on the company’s network. Although a number of customers have unlimited data plans, the deal would help those whose plans provide a limited amount of data use each month.

T-Mobile also announced a venture with Rhapsody to offer unRadio to its customers, allowing them access music without listening to advertisements and with the ability to skip as many songs as they want. unRadio will be free to customers covered by T-Mobile’s $80 a month unlimited data plan and $4 a month to others.

How much do you have to pay for the iPhone if you decide to keep it?

I have ATT now and I haven’t had any problems with it. I had T-Mobile, and the reason I changed was because they didn’t offer the IPhone.

But T-Mobile was okay and the reason I had it in the first place was that its service in Europe (I travel there fairly often) was the best because it had good co-providers and its technology was more accommodating to the European system. But now they’re all pretty good and the technology has shifted.

I think this will be a boost for T-Mobile - but they’ve got to improve their service personnel. You could get some great ones, but most of them were clueless.

This sounds like a good gimmick. I’m sure T-Mobile will win more than they will lose.

Would I be tempted to switch carriers? Nope. I’ve had Sprint for over a decade. Would I recommend Sprint, then? Nope again.

I’m convinced that all cell phone carriers suck. Its just a matter of who sucks the least. And once you make the bad decision to sign a contract, just stick with it.

The next bad decision could be worse.

With T-Mobile you don’t have to sign a contract. As for Sprint, I moved from them because of coverage. Knew someone who worked for them and they couldn’t use their phone in their Sprint office because of no coverage.

Back when I lived in KC, you knew that if you could see Sprint headquarters, your Sprint phone would not work.

why don’t you like Sprint?

My daughter is trying to get me to ditch verizon wireless for Sprint.

she says its cheaper with unlimited data.

When someone tells me what I want to hear I automatically get suspicious

Sprint has their framily plan. Shes trying to get you to switch so her bill goes down. You would have over likely end up paying less than you do now. Make sure the phone is returnable and give it a test drive.

Be very careful of T-Mobile, their coverage isn’t that great. Be sure to check their coverage map for the areas you want to operate in.

When I looked at T-Mobile plans they have a $70 plan + phone cost over 2 years. Add $24 if it were a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. I think the iPhone would be similar.

I have the T-Mobile $30 plan and brought my own Samsung Galaxy S4 so it is $30 flat rate per month.

Its not that I don’t like Sprint, I don’t like any of them. Although my last carrier was AT&T about 12 years ago.

But I do hear that when Sprint says unlimited 4G data, they mean it. Other carriers limit data usage after so many minutes or gigabytes or whatever. And I like the call quality and the dropped calls are very infrequent.

Cheaper? I don’t know about that. I have 3 phones on my plan with shared everything and premium data (required for smart phone usage.)

My three phones run me $195 per month.

Is a iPhone from Verison compatible with other carriers?

4 phones plus mifi & I’m embarrassed to say how much we’re paying per month!
