CITY OF LONDON, United Kingdom General David Petraeus, the former CIA director and head of the international forces in Afghanistan (ISAF), has today said that the United States is suffering deeply because of partisanship, and said that the country needs immigration reform.
Gen. Petraeus was speaking on the "After America, What?" panel at the Centre for Policy Studies Margaret Thatcher Liberty Conference at the Guildhall in the City of London.
"After America comes North America," he said, discussing how Canada, the United States and Mexico are set to be a formidable force together, "notwithstanding Mexicos rule of law issues".
"Clearly China is gong to continue to grow and develop, he said, but the former CIA chief was optimistic about Americas future.
"The United States does faces challenges, we do have to get immigration reform our debt-to-GDP ratio the deadlock in Washington, etcetera etcetera."
Petraeus, who now works for the KKR Global Institute, spent much of his time discussing how Americas Shale Gas revolution was the most positive thing to happen to the country in a long time. But he noted of the challenges that face America:
"Gerrymandering in the House of Representatives has [made it] less bipartisan because of the policy divide what has happened because of the redrawing of districts... there has become a tendency for the red districts to be bright red and the blue districts to be bright blue. This is a real problem.
"The primaries are more important and the general elections are a foregone conclusion. Thats a concern because it does make it more difficult to do what Ronald Reagan cold do with Tip O'Neill
reach across the aisle. It was ultimately what led to the closing of government
to the implementing of sequestration."

What they call "partisanship" is the push and pull of different factions and powers.
The legislative, executive and judicial powers pitted against each other; the three parts of the legislature, the president, the senate and the house of representatives pitted against each other; within the legislature, the parties pitted against each other; and even within the parties are different factions.
All these "wheels within wheels" as John Adams called them, preserve the liberties of the people.
But Patraeus comes from the dictatorial, top down society of the military. He should stay out of the affairs of the people.
Corporate generals are a threat to the country as well.
We have our own rule of law issues. His name is Barack Hussein Milhouse Obama.
Patraeus is the white version of Colin Bowell. 10 to one says if the Hildabeast gets the nomination that the overrated perfumed prince Petraeus will be her running mate.
He says we need immigration reform in one breath and that Mexico has rule of law issues in another. Is Mexico’s issue a failure to enforce issue? It is all so confusing.
Oh, you horny old goat—go shtup a non com...
Great point and I salute you!
Gridlock is part of the system. It is supposed to be hard to pass legislation. Groups are supposed to meet in the middle and if they can’t, nothing should get done because the law is obviously a bad one.
I do think we need immigration reform. We need to make it easier for the people that want to work here and want to become productive citizens. The amount of tape they have to go through is insanity. I have an Australian client that wants to stay here and he loves this country. He is constantly dealing with idiot gov employees, retarded forms, and people that don’t have a clue. We shouldn’t allow any more leechers in. No more people with their hands out. We need and want producers to enter this country as long as it is not at the expense of Americans. We need an America first immigration policy that favors the people and not greed heads in big business.
With apologies to Canada and a middle finger to Mexico, I'll never be loyal to anything but an independent, sovereign United States that adheres to it's founding principles. Needless to say, that loyalty is somewhat strained these days.
this unredeemed man needs to come clean about Benghazi
he used to unleash under his desk ....tsk tsk
I hope that the retired general clarifies what he himself means when he utters the words "immigration reform."
The first and only priority on the short term is to secure our borders. After our borders are secured, then and only then, should we deal with the tens of millions of illegal immigrants already here.
The second priority will be to identify and deport the criminals and criminal element among the illegals, like gangs, drug dealers, murderers, etc.
The third priority is to come up with a compassionate and fair way to deal with the hard working families who jumped the line to get into our country.
“But Patraeus comes from the dictatorial, top down society of the military. He should stay out of the affairs of the people.”
You also say he obviously has not read what you obviously consider to be the right books.
You denigrate the Military Academies, some of the finest institutions in the nation.
I guess Ike, George Washington and Grant should have stayed out of the affairs of the nation.
Here’s an idea, how about upholding the laws already on the books.

I did not in any way denigrate the Military Academies. I served in the military. It IS a dictatorial, top-down structure. That’s not a criticism. It really couldn’t function any other way.
George Washington was not a product of a military academy. He learned from the ground up and was also a legislator and farmer. His whole life was NOT in the military. Grant was a failure at everything but the military, he was a terrible administrator and had difficulties dealing with the various parts of the government. Ike proved himself to be an able administrator, working with all kinds of factions and personalities and nations during WWII. He did not give opinions about legislation or decry “partisanship” which apparently only exists when republicans don’t go along with democrats.
Barack Obama has done more damage and is far worse enemy to America than Barack Obama.
His time must be concluded
One World, Globalist.
Bammy should leave the US alone and work on fixing Mexico.
We already got a surplus of laws.
