IRAN has sent special forces and elite troops to Iraq to bolster efforts by the government to halt the advance of militants.
A 150-man unit of the Quds Force, the elite section of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, has deployed to Iraq, supported by a team of Saberin, Iran's equivalent of the SAS. They will assist Iraqi forces as they regroup after the loss of Mosul and Tikrit.
With troops already fighting in Syria to defend the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, Iran's decision to send soldiers into Iraq underscores its concern that another key ally is under threat.

Maybe we can get the Iranians to go after AQ.
Iran-Iraq II.
This is going to make the Saudis a little antsy. It was they who lobbied the Bushes heavily to involve us in Iraq so as to forestall the Iranians gaining influence there. Watch for the Saudis and the Israelis to edge a bit more towards each other.
I wonder what kind of shape the Iranian economy is in?
The enemy of our enemy is our enemy.
I have to say that a lot of dead Sunni and Shia fanatics isn't necessarily a bad thing. In the Iran-Iraq war millions of Iranian nutjobs met their maker as Reagan got payback for the hostage crisis.
Those geniuses in the Washington government have set up a lose/lose scenario for Iraq, the region and potentially the world. Iraq folds to a radical jihadist putsch, or survives in part due to the good graces of Iran, and will be beholden to them. Only misanthropists could enjoy this.
Well, Obama is getting what he wanted.
and who didn’t see this coming???
Why is Iran helping the Iraqi government? I would expect they would not be sorry to see the Iraqi government fail. I guess it’s strictly a Sunni v Shiite thing?
Yes I think tribal loyalty trumps geographical borders.
Iran is going in to consolidate the Southern part of the country. The Kurds took the north. The Sunnis got the $hit end of the stick and they are now sandwiched between Iran, Syria and Turkey.
The Saudis bit off more than they could chew here. And now they are expecting the US to bail them out. And it won’t happen and the Saudis will punish the US with higher gas prices.
And the sad part is,this is all Warren Buffet’s fault. If Obama approved Keystone this would never have happened. If Obama was smart, he would approve Keystone in a speech this afternoon, announcing the project has been fast tracked.
But he isn’t smart.
It appears that for the time being that they have been stopped at Samarra — 68 miles from Bagdad — which is a Shiite Iranian stronghold IIRC.
This won’t be a cakewalk —
“Why is Iran helping the Iraqi government?”
They are increasing their sphere of influence. Once they are all over the place they will probably install a puppet. But they have been transiting Iraq to Syria since Obama left the country without establishing a status of forces agreement.
The Iranians are coming to take delivery on their 140 shiny new M1A1 Abrams tanks (that we left in the custody of the Iraqi ‘national’ Army).
No risk to US forces and an absolutely golden opportunity to slaughter murderous islamatard fanatics in great numbers with little collateral damage.
They ran everybody out of a few cities and are just sitting there begging us to introduce them to Allah.
Of course, our own islamatard will not unleash the dogs of war on his brothers in arms.
They are confined to theater, let them have 'em.
Hey NAPA? This is Abdul in Fallujah.
You got oil filters for 2004 General Dynamics M1A1?
The Saudis, though, would be happy for the Shiites to deal with their (sunni) radical problem and die doing so.
