Virginia Senate: How Ed Gillespie could pull off an upset

ROANOKE, Virginia — There’s no doubt Ed Gillespie is the underdog in the Virginia Senate race.

He’s polled well behind the man he’s trying to unseat, Democrat Mark Warner. The incumbent is the richest member of the Senate and a well-liked figure in the state. Meanwhile, many Virginians still don’t know who Gillespie is.

But Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, is an old hand at campaigns. And now that he’s the candidate, he insists he can pull off the upset.

“I assure you I have never analyzed a race more carefully than this one, and it’s a very winnable race,” the 52-year-old said after nabbing his party’s nomination at a convention this weekend.

As much as I would have loved to see someone like Sharron Angle win in Nevada, over what we got I would have taken a moderate unseating Harry Reid.

And I guarantee that of the idiots that say they’re fine with Mark Warner winning — ask which current Republican Senators they would contentedly support — I would guess one of the whole lot or none. That is the fairy tale land they are living in. I would suggest they move to Nazareth — at some point there will return The Candidate that I’m sure they’ll have no reservation supporting.

The main reason that the democrats kick our asses all over the place is the fact that they do not fight each other. For the past forty years the disgruntled among us have demanded a third party. That sure is a good idea. For electing even more democrats. Right now the number one priority should be kicking Harry Reid out of his leadership role, but no. We have to get rid of our old(read experienced)electable senators and congressmen to satisfy some rage. Rage on while the ship of state goes to the bottom.

Bush did nothing to stem the flood of illegals on his watch. Wasn’t even halfhearted about the now-abandoned border fence. Troops are dying in Afghanistan today b/c Bush refused to commit the resources and failed to kill Bin Laden when we had him trapped & wounded on a mountain side. And also b/c Bush pursued COIN/nation-building instead of straight punitive action. Plus he invaded Iraq on bad Intel and allowed the situation in Afghanistan to once again become a mess. I take 2nd place to no one in my disgust with Bathhouse Barry; he’s made everything worse. But there’s not been a real conservative in the WH since Reagan.

I will leave the Senate vote blank and just vote on the rest of the downballot races.

As I did in the last gubernatorial race in New Jersey. Governor's vote blank.

Funny I heard that when Romney was the nominee for president. Please someone tell me again how there was not any difference between choosing a moderate repub over a flaming liberal... I’ll take a mealy mouthed republican anytime rather then concede my vote to a democrat.

And he is pro-amnesty, which will destroy this country with the stroke of a pen. Gillespie didn't go after Warner on the Gang of 8 bill in the primary and won't in the general.

I find it interesting that John Warner is endorsing Mark Warner in this race.

High turnout in NoVA guarantees a Warner victory.

100% behind Ed Gillespie.

I’m in the 7th District, and Republicans here threw out Cantor’s pick for the district chair, and they’re ALL OUT for Dave Brat. Those same hard-working Conservatives are all in for Gillespie. We HAVE to be this time.

You try to win where you can. Shak Hill was a good man, but he was an inarticulate candidate who didn’t have the full-throated support of the Tea Partiers whom I know personally and who have been pounding the pavement since 2009.

NO Mark Warner. NO NO NO.

I am still hoping for veto-proof Senate votes, with possibly WV Manchin on board, and without Virginia we cannot do this!

I was a delegate at the convention yesterday and have been following the campaigns of Gillespie and Hill. I think Ed Gillespie is a strong candidate and has a good shot at winning. If you want 6 more years of Mark Warner, do not complain if the Democrats maintain control of the Senate and block all bills coming from the house. I just do not understand the logic to allow Democrats to maintain control by not voting for someone who, in my mind, is no where near Warner.

I do not understand your comment.

After all we do have Obama, he and McCain are on the same page regarding political free speach. McCain worked with Ted Kennedy. Obama (read experienced) used the IRS

I’d love to see it happen, but, I’ve pretty well given up on, and written off Virginia.

The idiocy of some posters here still astound me, even after all these years.

I was a delegate at the convention in Roanoke. This was a coronation by the GOPe. There was just token opposition. I don't know how much you know about politics in VA, but if you think Gillespie is any better than Mark Warner on immigration, the defining issue of our time, then you are dead wrong. We are being given an echo, not a choice.

I love Reagan and have a framed photo of him hanging in my office. So the last time you voted for a candidate for President was 1984?

To your criticisms of Bush, this is all I have to say:

Other option 2000: Al Gore
Other option 2004: John Kerry

I wish it were this easy in real life debates.

I couldn’t agree more. Romney would have been a far superior president, than what we have now. Pride is a brutal master.

I know. Me, too. I can’t give up quite yet and just hand the Old Dominion over to the darkness.
