RUNOFF? MCDANIEL, COCHRAN BOTH UNDER 50 PERCENT AS FINAL VOTES COUNTED [McDaniel leads]

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi —With final votes still being counted, Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel is poised to force a runoff against 42-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in the GOP primary here, likely prompting a three-week dash to the finish of an epic race between conservatives and the GOP Establishment.

"Whether it's tomorrow or whether it's three weeks from now we will be victorious,” McDaniel said during a speech to supporters here around 11:30 p.m. CT. Cochran did not plan to address his campaign rally, according to NBC reporter Kasie Hunt.

With 97.9 percent of precincts reporting, McDaniel was up nearly 3,000 votes at 49.6 percent to Cochran's 48.8 percent, according to the Associated Press.

The likely runoff follows an all-night nail-biter between Cochran and McDaniel that saw each candidate see-saw between winner and loser. McDaniel supporters at an event here were ecstatic, cheering loudly at the television whenever new results come in while a country rock band and bagpipe band take turns entertaining the crowd.

McDaniel and Carey are both born-again Christians with strong ties to the Church Community. I’m thinking Carey’s folks will go for Chris.

Then there will be a “Plurality” Winner. Whoever gets the most votes between the two candidates.

My point was that we weren't dealing with one single national election, but we were dealing with 49 separate state elections. And even with runoffs in each of those 49 states, Clinton would have won. Perot votes would have split more towards the challenger than the incumbent.

As much as I loathe Clinton, GHWBush deserved to lose. He was the anti-Reagan. And no runoff would have turned his 37% share of the vote into a 50% +1 share.

A voter who votes in the primary of one party may not “crossover” to vote in the run-off of another party.

Just like Texas. Anyone who did not vote in a democrate primary, can vote the republican run-off. Voting in the original primary is not a requirement.

Unfortunately not. I think runoffs are stupid, but there are states that require a primary to have 50 percent. It’s irritating and idiotic, but what can you do...

Runoffs are bad news for incumbents and the establishment. Cruz would not be a senator for Texas without runooffs. There have been several now that have unseated the GOP-e candidates. Expect there to be a major establishment push to get rid of run offs.

Thanks for those links. So, a voter who has voted in one party’s primary can’t cross over and vote in the other party’s primary runoff election which means no voters in the democrat primary can now vote in the runoff but what about voters who didn’t bother to vote? They would still seem to be eligible and since Cochran already asked Dems to vote for him I can see his campaign targeting Dem voters who didn’t participate in the primary.
