Obama: Sorry I Broke The Law In Not Notifying Congress About Prisoner Swap

A top aide to President Obama is now apologizing to Congress for not informing lawmakers, as required by law, that the White House was planning to trade an alleged deserter for five top Taliban commanders.

The apology comes after Obama himself defended his actions this morning, insisting his administration had discussed the release with Congress “for some time.”

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) told reporters that she received a call from Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken on Monday evening apologizing for failing to inform Congress about the deal to exchange five Taliban detainees for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

“I had a call from the White House last night, from Tony Blinken, apologizing for it,” Feinstein, the chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, told reporters at the Senate on Tuesday.

Feinstein said that it was “very disappointing” that President Obama decided not to alert Congress about the deal, suggesting that there was not a “level of trust” at the White House.

"He apologized for it and said it was an oversight," Feinstein said about the call with Blinken, clarifying that it was her “impression” of the call.

Feinstein said that in previous conversations with Senators about the trade, “there were very strong views and they were virtually unanimous against trade.”

“The White House is pretty unilateral about what they want to do when they want to do it,” she added, pointing out that the White House failed to work together with Congress in the

He is apologizing for breaking a law that he himself signed. He should be apologizing to himself via resignation.

Did he also apologize for his wanton violation of Section VIII of the USA PATRIOT Act, which makes it illegal for any person to provide expert advice, assistance or personnel to terrorist organizations?

Because if he did so apologize, I missed it.

I suppose that if Truman had traded Goebbels, Göring, Himmler, Hess, and Bormann in the midst of the Nuremburg Trials in exchange for a lousy defector, then all he would have had to do is apologize? If only with his fingers crossed behind his back?

Obama is laughing in Congress' face and they don't seem to be able to do anything but take it.

This is nothing less than public humiliation for Congress; a slap in the face to all military personnel; and a gift to the Taliban. And the press can't seem to figure out what the big deal is.

A Republican President doing this would have caused dozens of hearings on Capitol Hill, numerous stories on TV News Magazine shows, endless handwringing about “The Imperial Presidency” and questions about “Does the President understand the way Our Government Works?”

How about a special prosecutor, and years of investigations?

Remember Iran/Contra? Rescuing our captured Americans then was considered a scandal.

Remember Iran/Contra? Rescuing our captured Americans then was considered a scandal.

Waaait a minute.

Iran/Contra was not about rescuing captured Americans.

The captured Americans were released when Reagan was delivering his first inaugural address.

Iran/Contra was about (a) opening a dialog with Iran, which had completely frozen us out until then, and (b) supplying weapons to the Nicaraguan Contras in defiance of a law passed by Congress.

Kind of a case of Reagan not following a law he didn't like.

But there were no captured Americans, to the best of my recollection.
