I was actually in China when that event took place.
China was “opening up” and wanted to host a so-called “international event” to give themselves some international PR.
On the other hand, the staid Chinese officials who tried to choreograph the whole thing had no idea of some of the lesbian weirdos and their activities that would show up.
I remember one huge controversy about some “womyn” who wanted to hold a topless protest. After a lot of discussion, the Chinese gave them some corner of a remote parking lot, ringed by security, with only “pre-approved” journalists allowed to enter.
Interesting. I can only imagine the expressions on their faces when they saw the Dworkin crowd.
