The same way we dealt with the Barbary Pirates? Maybe we can work our way back to paying out 20% of our Federal budget in tribute and ransom again?
The 20% tribute, referenced by Null and Void, was paid to the Tripolitan Sultanate (then part of the Ottoman Empire). The kidnapping of American merchant mariners was pre-Tripolitan war under the first and only administration of the New England liberal and successor to George Washington, President John Adams. Adams’ VP, Thomas Jefferson, having purchased and read the Koran, advised Adams not to pay any ransom, but to fight instead. Jefferson’s research in the Koran led him correctly to believe that these Islamic jihadists could not be susceptible to rational diplomacy, but would be quite persuadable by the US Marines. Adams refused his advice and commenced the 20% drain on the US GDP.
Running against Adams’ for his 2nd term, Jefferson defeated him with the slogan, “Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute.”
Jefferson commissioned the construction of the USS Constitution, which became known as “Old Ironsides”, sent it to North Africa loaded with leatherneck sharpshooters and defeated the Sultan’s marauding navy, forcing him to sign a peace treaty. The Corps immortalized that war in the first stanza of the US Marine Corps (for President Obama, that needs to be pronounced like ‘Core’) Hymn thusly: “From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli...”.
We needed to fight them one more time about ten-years later under James Madison. Superior American naval technology and strength ended the high seas’ terror of the Ottoman Empire in the Mediterranean. A century later, the Ottoman Empire was smashed because of its alliance with Germany in WWI, and ceased to exist as such. Today, we know part of it as Turkey.
Our money? Oh no no no... This was my fundraising suggestion for the hashtagtivists and foreigners. Just an option they might explore, since they act so hypocritical of military operations whenever it suits their agenda.
