The head of Russia’s space program says Moscow will reject the United States’ request to use the International Space Station beyond 2020 – the latest twist in a standoff between the two countries over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who leads Russia’s defense industry, made the announcement Tuesday. He also said Russia will block Washington from using Russian-made rocket engines to launch military satellites, according to Reuters.

I’m confused, why are we asking permission to use our own $%#^ing space station???? We designed it, hauled it up there and assembled it, so the (&)*& are the Russians to say who gets to use it????

from Wiki ISS is a joint US-Russian venture.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a space station, or a habitable artificial satellite in low Earth orbit. It is a modular structure whose first component was launched in 1998.[7] Now the largest artificial body in orbit, it can often be seen at the appropriate time with the naked eye from Earth.[8] The ISS consists of pressurised modules, external trusses, solar arrays and other components. ISS components have been launched by American Space Shuttles as well as Russian Proton and Soyuz rockets.[9] In 1984 the ESA was invited to participate in Space Station Freedom.[10] After the USSR dissolved, the United States and Russia merged Mir-2 and Freedom together in 1993.[9]

Help, please. Is it true that we cannot operate the space station with the Russian segment? And if so, who thought that was a good plan?

Just asking.

Honestly. I’ve heard ‘Shanks Mare” for all my 64 years and never knew what it meant. Do you have some history on that?

I suppose they’ll let us use it, but we have to drive there without their help.

request to use the International Space Station beyond 2020

We don't request to use it; we built it and there is no Russian veto on that.

What he's talking about is the request to GET there.

Because currently we can't. Gotta use a Soyuz outta Baikonur.

But supposedly by 2020 we'll have a fleet of capsules and spaceplanes - Dragon, Cygnus, Orion and CST-100.

Which I actually believe is true...unless the Kenyan kills all the programs.

Which he might if he thought there was an illegal somewhere who needs a free lunch.

We were gonna walk away from Soyuz rides anyway.

I'd never heard it, and I'm close to you in age.

World Wide Words: Shank's mare. I can rest now, I learned something new today.

The Russkies are currently the only ones with the lift capability to get our folks to-and-from it, thanks to the Obamanation mothballing our shuttle fleet and putting them on display like museum pieces. That’s who they are.

IMO, and I have stated so on this forum a number of times, it was a horses ass idea to refer to our space station as an international space station.

We paid for about 90% of the cost of putting that space station up there. So instead of calling it Space Station USA or whatever, we caved and gave it away in name.

Can someone tell me who would have refused to go to Space Station USA? Who would have refused to provide some modules for it?

We are a nation that is in full melt-down abdication.

Man, watching this is painful.

It’s Scottish, dating from the eighteenth century. There was a verb, to shank or to shank it, meaning to go on foot. This is from standard English shank for the part of the leg from the knee to the ankle, which comes from Old English sceanca, the leg bone. This verb developed into shank’s naig or shank’s naigie (where the second words are local forms of nag, a horse) and later into shank’s mare. It was a wry joke: I haven’t got a horse of my own for the journey, so I’ll use Shank’s mare to get there, meaning I’ll go on my own two feet. This supposed link with a person called Shank explains why the first word is often capitalised.

Another form, now more common in Britain, is shank’s pony.
