Donald Sterling and Cliven Bundy- Two people, who are recently accused of disparaging black people, some of it caught on video and audiotape; yet they deny they are racist.
Last week on CNN Bundy was recorded saying:
If I say Negro or black boy or slave, Im not Im not. If those people cannot take those kind of words and not be offensive then martin Luther King has not gotten his job done yet.
So in some odd way to Cliven Bundy its Dr. Kings fault that the rest of the world doesnt line up with his point of view.
That was last week.
This week theres a new one from Los Angeles Clippers basketball team owner Donald Sterling.
You want me to have hate towards black people? I dont want you to have hate. Thats what people do. They turn things around. I want you to love them, privately. In your whole life every day you could be with them, every single day of your life Not in public? But why publicize it on your Instagram and why bring them to my games?
You can love them, privately.
Sounds like the old slave owner who would pick one of his slaves and love them privately.
Its all too warped and twisted and really defies any explanation beyond bigotry and racism.
Clinical Psychologist Dr. Jeff Gardere said on CNN that, Im not surprised by any of this. We have people who have very racist views but who dont consider themselves to be racist. They think the things that they say about certain people and their thought patterns are based in some sort of reality. Theyre based on stereotypes of course.
The stereotype is that people other than those who look like you are not considered worthy or good enough to be seen with you in public.
Ive said for years now that the new racism is the denial of racism.
In the past few weeks after hearing from Bundy and Sterling, I have changed my mind.
The new racism is being unaware that you are racist.
And that is the worst kind of anything; to be woefully ignorant.
Because in the latest two cases ignorance truly is not bliss.
It is downright dangerous.
You mean he has a wide ranging background, he is ignorant of danged nigh everything?
Yes and well stated. I remember the old days after WW2. There was much disappointment in England, over the failure of British athletes at the 1948 Olympic Games. I was there when Chris Chattaway, broke the world record 5,000 metres track record, against the Russian Vladimir Kuts 1954.
It was not racism at all. Just a heart felt relief that at least some British athelete could beat the whole bloomin' lot.
Nothing wrong with that.
An African-American’s opinion on racism can only be subjective and, therefore, must be discounted.
I Don't Care
There's was a time I thought that 'American' would win out and the race thing would resolve itself.
I was wrong.
I have a hard time calling my private thoughts expressed to someone I know well, as being subject to anyone’s judgment besides the person spoken to. Racist actions are necessary for racism to be offensive outside private contacts, and only then subject to sanctions. Words should not be enough.
Don Lemon : Perhaps the term black hole is racist, after all, why do they call it black, but I still think MH370 is in it
Since black Americans think they cannot be racists because they have no power, according to his logic, they are all racists.
You cannot legislate morality. Society recognizes the need for civility between the races and the need to eliminate institutional racism in our melting pot but that civility does not eliminate racism. Racial hatred is useful to certain elements of society and those elements stir the pot for their own purposes. There is also residual prejudice left over from how all folks of different races were raised in a different time and place. It exists and denying it doesn’t make it so. The old truism “birds of a feather flock together” will always be true.

Hey Don Lemon — have you stopped beating your wife yet?
I don’t see how anyone can go through life and not recognize that the idea that race is only skin deep or a social construct is childish stupidity. But regardless of what prejudices you may have toward any given group, the most important thing is that you are able to judge individuals as individuals.
In a nation of free speech this is alarming.
I don’t like this, its very simular to the way Bundy was responded to in regaurd to his triade of ignorant but not intended to hate comments on the darker race.
I didn’t read the article.
Duh!
So we’re all just unconscious whipping boys for any slander you dish out?

I was told in 2008 that I was just too stupid to realize I was racist. It was, of course, due to my objection to President Obama’s call for revenge.
Don Lemming is beyond stupid. One actually has to work at it to be that ignorant and he has gone beyond that.
80 IQ at best....
“There’s was a time I thought that ‘American’ would win out and the race thing would resolve itself. I was wrong.”
It will work itself out; the perpetual malcontents are being contracepted and aborted into extinction. Look how Hispanic so many cities are now; the black areas are shrinking, and they are being replaced in every walk of life by Hispanics. The “first black president” (BJ Clinton) started this process with the 1996 welfare reform, which he engineered to win enough white votes for a second term.
Salem witch trials: if the woman accused of being a witch didn’t drown when dunked in water, then she was a witch and was burned at the stake; if she drowned, she was innocent, but of course deader than a doornail. Bottom line, you can’t win for losing.
Same here, if you are Whitey you are racist no matter what you say or feel about racism. We are at a point now in society that we will be constantly verbally walking on eggshells, afraid of any potential slip of the tongue, in particular when it comes to all issues of race.
Lemon, hot knowing you are stupid is the new stupidity.
I use prejudice in the broadest possible way, meaning pre judging. Some may be positive- a person wearing glasses may appear more intelligent, one might think an Asian might be a better student, etc. Others are bad but not criminal- a beautiful woman can’t be very smart, or a man can be thought more violent then a female, etc. But very few people are truly racists, I believe. There are even many people who will hold negative thoughts about a group yet treat individuals of that group just fine.
