US states may go back to electric chair and firing squads

Shortage of drugs for lethal injections leads states to consider alternative methods of executing prisoners

By Raf Sanchez, Washington

6:42PM BST 01 May 2014

US states may revert to killing their death row inmates with electric chairs, firing squads and gas chambers as it becomes increasingly difficult to source chemicals for lethal injections.

The EU has banned the export of one of the most common sedatives used in lethal injections, forcing US states to experiment with new "cocktails" of drugs for executions.

One such experimental recipe was used in the botched execution of an Oklahoma prisoner on Tuesday, leaving him to writhe in pain and die of a massive heart attack 43 minutes after being injected.

The shortage of execution drugs, coupled with fears the courts may intervene to ban experimental methods of lethal injection, have prompted states to look at alternative ways to kill prisoners.

Tennessee's legislature has passed a bill that would reintroduce the electric chair if the state was unable to find drugs for lethal injections.

The state's Republican governor is still weighing whether to sign it into law.

Missouri is considering a proposal to reintroduce both firing squads and gas chambers if it becomes impossible to carry out a lethal injection.

Richard Dieter, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Centre, said the laws were intended as symbols by conservative politicians of their commitment to the death penalty.

"It's about being even more blatant than the anti-death penalty side. To see this as a rational process is to miss the harshly divisive political atmosphere that produces these things," he said.

They’ll never come up with the right solution because there’s no right way to do the wrong thing.

Question: Do veterinarians have any trouble getting drugs to euthanize sickly dying animals?

Question: Do drugs in question 1 have any trouble working on humans, albeit, with appropriate dosages?

I have a question: If people think Dr. Kevorkian kills people in a noble way, then they can’t say that’s unacceptable for the death penalty?

IT’S ABOUT TIME! All of these touchy feely, feel good executions are starting to piss me off. A little suffering is good for the soul.

Nonsense. Some people just need killing. Those that do don’t deserve to be coddled through it. A firing squad is still more humane that the way most of them brutalized their victims.

Yes, I *am* from Texas... why do you ask?

If it weren’t for the executioner’s job to implement, I’d like to see people executed the same way, over the same length of time they killed their victims.

I will also admit that I wouldn’t mind all that much if they made it 10x as violent and painful.

Let the little gang bangers give that a thought...

I propose the H-SATS method of execution. What you do is strap the criminal in a chair in a sound proof room that has giant speakers in it and you play “Hillarys Sick and Tired Speech” until the criminal is dead. Yes I know I know, it may be cruel and unusual punishment, but the extreme torture only lasts a couple seconds until the extreme irritation knocks out the criminal and then stops his heart. Here is a sample if you are interested:

*WARNING* EXTREMELY HARMFUL SOUND

It’s a good point but the opposition will say it is against the person’s will.

Which is true. I am just addressing the claims that it is not, “humane.”

why do we not just put a mask or sealed helmet on them and pump in nitrogen in small volumes until unconscious then increase volume until dead. Should take about 4-5 minutes tops.

We could use many of these murders on death row for sniper training at Ft Bragg, NC. Kind of like the Goat Lab for medical personnel (Read: 18D)

It would be great training for the sniper at 600-1000 meters. Those card board targets are not very realistic donchano. Always remember...."Train like you fight!"
