SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has scheduled a news conference for Thursday to announce a plan to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Committee members representing business and labor could not agree on issues like crediting tips and benefits against the $15 minimum. And council member Kshama Sawant revealed another hurdle -- she said there has been little talk of automatically increasing the minimum wage with inflation.

“If going forward the new minimum wage does not have a cost of living increase attached to it every year of the phase in it's not going to work out, Sawant said.

Let’s take this to its logical conclusion. You have a mom working at, say, Microsoft or Boeing who makes 15/hr and her husband’s insurance plan covers her.

She works 55 hours/week and between hustling daycare, soccer/dance/football pickups really works 90 hours/week.

Now, with her degree, even if it’s in basket-weaving, she can
take an easy job at say, Starbucks, making the same wage, no responsibility, no overtime, and take the jobs from the 12.00/hr guys will have to leave Seattle since the quality people in Seattle will snap up those jobs in a heartbeat.

Who loses? The Starbucks employees who have been holding down the fort for 10 bucks an hour.

I went to a meeting over in Seattle a couple of weeks ago with a councilman from one of the incorporated cities in my county. The meeting was about the 15 hourly wage issue.

You are right, this 15 dollar thing is just a stepping stone for what they really want...$22.50 hourly minimum wage!

You may get your chance to help campaign, Bay.

Let me know my corner assignment and I’ll bring my sign to wave at the smart folks in Seattle. Maybe they can explain what this will do to the local tourism industry.
