Ukraine's military launched assaults to retake rebel-held eastern towns on Thursday in which up to five people were reported killed, a move Russian President Vladimir Putin warned would have "consequences".
The offensive sent international tensions soaring and oil prices up on the prospect of Russia making good on its threat of a massive response in the ex-Soviet republic.
In Slavyansk, a flashpoint eastern Ukrainian town held by rebels since mid-April, armoured military vehicles drove past an abandoned roadblock in flames to take up position.
Shots were heard as a helicopter flew overhead, and the pro-Kremlin rebels ordered all civilians out of the town hall to take up defensive positions inside.

Kyiv Post live blog is saying the Ukrainian government ops have already been suspended.
Russia rattled it’s saber, but I think there may be more to it than that.
Ukraine claimed a “Large” operation, yet the video evidence only shows three APC’s launching an attack against roadblocks outside if Slovansk, that may, or may not, have been repulsed when reinforcements arrived.
Also, Russian-language NTV is claiming that the soldiers of at least one APC, #700, were speaking English to each other during the attack.
Who knows what is really going on. twitter is all over the place.
