Oklahoma will charge homeowners who generate their own power

A disturbing story out of the Sooner State this week, noted by Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway. Under the terms of a recently passed bill, expected to be signed by Governor Mary Fallin, homeowners who install their own private solar or wind turbine energy resources and sell some of the juice back to energy companies will be paying a fee for the privilege.

Hook up your neighbors to your extra power and barter with them in turn.

What extra power? I would suggest reading the illumintaing account of the Ithaca public library's experience with solar power, here

Why should utilities be forced to buy this power at rates higher than they generate their own power?

As far as I am concerned, the utilities shouldn't HAVE to buy it back...period.

LOL! Yup. Devoid of any meaningful data so a person with half a brain can’t conclude anything. Even someone with a whole brain gets no help.

Well, just keeping up with the meme that no government is to be trusted. With friends like these ...

This is utterly absurd.

What amazingly information free article

Not surprising considering that the title of the article is deliberately misleading. Oklahoma is not charging homeowners who generate their own power.

Oklahoma is charging homeowners who sell their own power. Big difference there.

And in Oklahoma you’ll be adding a fee for the privilege. If that goes through how long till other states don’t want to miss out on their tax? Becuse that is what it is isn’t it? a tax?............ Kinda strange this Ok. Gov. being a Repub.

Does that go for a mortgage as well?

If I were to do solar, I’d probably either build it into the mortgage or do it in a modular fashion.

Of course they sell power for less than they pay to generate it. They have to build the entire transmission/distribution system.

Absolutely. Why should anyone be allowed to use the distribution system for free?

What would any reasonable person do who built a private road into their property and then all the neighbors decided to start using it because it is such a great road?

You are assuming continued and reliable supplies of natural gas at affordable rates. That is probable but not certain.

Government Subsidies?”

You’re right - how could I possibly forget those. Was talking with some neighbors at a gathering this past Saturday. Someone mentioned the fact that the $500 energy subsidy had expired as of 12/31/2013. Nobody in this group was eligible even though some had changed out some doors, windows and replaced their roof. We are all among the pullers of the wagon.

It takes far longer to recoup your losses than the equipment will last.

The essence of liberalism.
They do not let FACTS get in the way of how they FEEL about something.

This is followed shortly by calling you a racist, global warming denier. :)

How is it that they pay for the transmission gear by selling power for less than it costs to generate it?

My neighbor installed one of those generators but almost didn’t as he was initially told that the thing would use about $100 per day in natural gas use. He had one installed and it works for well for his survivors in an emergency. His health took a dive soon after and he died before I could talk to him about it. I think it would be higher to run per a month than the normal electricity/gas bills.
